actually, i contradicted myself

bob wasn't the orginal host of price either, bill cullen hosted in the 50's, but it was a MUCH different game and format. The format we know and love today started in 1972 and has continued to today, with bob as host.

OK we can drop the whole "Bob Barker is an ICON" thing.... YES he is an ICON of TV game show hosts... got it!! Chat Icon

Would Britney Spears be considered an icon?

IMO she is just a mondern day madonna replica

Yes and that I think, is what will make her a future Icon. If she continues to reinvent herself the way Madonna does and continues to shock people...then she'll be the "new" Madonna.

But then is that really an icon?
Or is it just someone following in someone elses foot steps...

Re: Icons

Unfortunately in the case of Britney, I just don't think she is intelligent enough to ever have the 'lasting power' that a Madonna did.. no diss on Brit, I just see her as very "handled" and misguided. I always felt that Madonna was TOTALLY in control of her destiny and she made calculated choices and took risks that NOONE else before her had done.. and that propelled her to where she is today

Madonna might not have been taken seriously in her early days, but she was a smart cookie FAR beyond anythin Britney has ever shown us.. I dont think back in the 80s I ever though Madonna would still be around cranking out music, but look at her... she is still amazing and making headlines

I agree with you - they are supposed to be starters, not followers. But it isn't always the case that a person who becomes an Icon is an innovator. If Britney becomes an icon, it would probably be undeservedly so and only because of sheer popularity, if that's what it is about her.

Madonna & Oprah are two of my all time favorites! I highly respect and love both of them Chat Icon

eta: Because they have always seemed to excel in whatever they do and put a lot of thought into it...whether its sensationalism by Madonna or selfless charity by Oprah, it's from their heart and soul....

I agree- she has real staying power and that, to me, is something that makes an icon.

I don't see anyone in our generation really. It's sad. Even today's huge stars, like Tom Cruise, etc. don't come close to the Jimmy Stewarts of old.

Re: Icons

As much as I can't STAND her and hoped she would be in oblivion by now- Brittany Spears has been around for what- 7-8 years now? ANd every new single gets overplayed on the radio- I think she does have staying power- and thats a sign about the terrible taste in music the American Public at large has.

I think there will be "icons" but I think they are manufactured now. Look at all these reality shows- "American Idol" "Rock Star" "So you think you can dance" "Americas next top Model"- there was atime when people were discovered for talent- not manufactured- even all the Boy Bands had someone audition them and teach them moves etc... music today isn't organic anymore- a guy who plays drums know a guy who plays guitar, etc...

I think Bill Clinton is an "Icon". Madeline Albright should be one.

I disagree- he really made a difference in the legal landscape of 1st Amendment law. I don'
t think its something the general public is aware of- but it has made a difference in free speech. I think that constitutes being considered an icon.

I guess the question we really need to ask is how do we define "Icon"?
