I may have a beautiful cervix, but...
My OB just called to give me the results of my blood work, and he tells me I have Metabolic Syndrome. Anyone know anything about this?
Basically, my bad cholesterol is too high, and the good is too low; I am too fat (central obesity); I don't exercise enough.
So he doesn't want to give me medication and says it is still OK for us to TTC, but I have to really make huge adjustments in diet and activity -- NO fats, NO alcohol (!!!), and get a treadmill and use 5-6 times/week.
It is partially from genetic predisposition, but I bet all my years of smoking, drinking and eating fried foods in Spain didn't help!
He scared the hell outta me, I am pretty upset.....

I also wanted to add...have you gone to see a GP? They may be better able to help you with the cholesterol and getting that under control.

It's always upsetting to hear that kind of news from your doctor.
The good news is that it's all stuff within your power and it's all stuff that is going to help you get your BFP!!
I know it's going to be hard, but I know you can do it. In fact, you've also inspired me to get back with the program as well and get off my butt!!
And, of course, if you need ANYTHING from me please let me know!!

Thanks -- Well my GP basically told me months ago, when my cholesterol levels were WORSE, that I should change my diet and he couldn't give me drugs because I am ttc...but that's it.
My levels have improved a lot since then, I have been trying, but I have to try harder...

Kara, that is such frustrating news! 
But, you've improved your levels so far and I just know that you will get them down even further!
Have you thought about going to a nutritionist- maybe they could help with a low cholesterol diet?

Donna: YES - we should go walking in the evenings!! I don't have your number but we can meet midway between our houses and then head wherever!!
Ariella: I might try a nutritionist if things don't improve but I just picked up my bloodowrk from last year and from this past Feb., and I see everything is improving so ... I know what I HAVE to do, I just have to DO IT!!!

I don't know about metabolic syndrome, but I got back from vacation to find a card from my doc with my info on it. For the cholesterol numbers he just wrote "Too high" and then he wrote "Must lose weight, excercise."
I think we may put our plans on hold for a little while because my numbers are really bad and I am also asthmatic, so I'm nervous.

i know alot about metabolic syndrome because one of my clients is an obesity medication so i do alot of obesity research and metabolic syndrome is a top spinoff of that

Metabolic syndrome just means you have a combination of things that are a red flag. High cholesterol, obesity, sometimes high blood pressure. A lot of people will go on to diabetes if they don't make some major changes.
If you end up having difficulty conceiving, sometimes taking a diabetes medication metformin can help. But you are best off trying lifestyle changes first.
Don't be too scared and get down on yourself - it is just a huge wake up call. Be happy your doctor told you this so you can change things before problems start...most docs don;t pick it up and it goes on until they have outright diabetes...
Enjoy the exercise - it is as powerful as an antidepressant med!
ETA: The nutritionist is a GREAT idea!
