Re: I know the entire world is not TTC but...

I definitely agree with the above posts. I just started reading TCOYF and am amazed at what I was never taught! Why at 28 am I just learning these things about my body? I had no idea what CF was!!!!

And discussing this newly learned info with my educated female friends and my DH is very frustrating. DH still does not believe that there is only a very small time frame each month that a woman can get pregnant. And when I told him that even then, the chances were only about 20%, he could not believe it. It was engrained in his head that no protection = baby. I guess I should be thankful for that though!!!!

Even if a woman is not TTC, she should still know how her body works and what is normal and what is not.

I had no idae how long it could take. I was blissfully unaware of cycles and temping and whatnot.

But for her to constatly ask you "no baby yet" is just rude.

My reply to someone that kept doing that:

"No husband yet?"

That may shut her up.

Ladies, I'll be honest, it wasn't until my 2nd that I understood how it all worked time-wise. I didn't even understand how to figure the length of my cycles, much less when I ovulated or anything else, until a year ago. I felt like such a moron asking and researching this stuff...once I did, I felt empowered somehow. Like I understood one of life's great mysteries!

My mom never explained how to chart my period simply for the sake of knowing when to expect it. For a long time, I would just be shocked when AF showed up. That evolved into my lack of knowledge on the timing of getting pregnant/ovulating/etc... as an adult.Chat Icon

To answer your question, Goldi, I had no idea that conceiving could be so. much work, even for younger, healthy couples. (I'm 25 and not TTC).

I did the same thing. My friend said, "when are you having a baby?" (mind you, I was pregnant at the time but hadn't shared with my mom yet), I replied, "when are you and Jon getting married?" She shut up real quick.

Then I went home and cried that people are so freaking ignorant.

I agree.... RUDE RUDE RUDE!

And yes, when I think back to high school health class, they made it sound like you could get pregnant each and every single time you had sex regardless of what time of month it was. I think it was meant to be more of a scare tactic than anything.

Its sad really that women and young women are not taught about how their bodies work.

I have no clue about this stuff (I guess I will learn it all real quick) but I did know that you can only get preggers during ovulation.... I thought everyone did.

Yes Rude....!!!

DH and I have been dealing with IF issues, and had to deal with sooooooooooo many questions and comments at my FIL's surprise party of this past weekend. Including a comment my FIL made over the microphone to about 75 people about how he's grateful for all his grandchildren (6 of them) and how he's waiting for his son and DIL to get busy. Chat Icon I know he means no harm, but I had, had all I could take and was ready to make the next person who made a comment to me or to us feel like a piece of shyte by saying, "yes, we would like to have a baby too, but unfortunately we have been struggling with infertility issues for almost a year"

Of course I wouldn't say that, but oh how tempted I was!

my mom got pregnant five times (2 m/c) and when i tried to explain this to her she looked like i was nuts. . . she didn't "plan" any of the pregnancies.

If she knew I went for a pre-TTC GYN appointment ( I am not even TRYING for another 2-3 years ) she would freak.

But I have to agree with her, sometimes I feel like having all this information will make it harder for me when the time comes. Chat Icon it is just too stressful!

You would think...but I only began to understand this stuff just under a year ago...and I have a 6 year old and a 2 week old! I didn't even know how to track my period correctly. I certainly had no clue about ovulation! They tell you in "family planning" (sex ed) that women have 28 day cycles...they simply don't allow for any variance in their speeches...I have 30-40 day cycles at best. I would sit around trying to determine how it had been only 28 days, I had some wacky ways for coming up with 28...none of them made sense! My mom assumed they taught me all this stuff and never bothered....HINT: they went over this stuff when I was in the 5th grade (so I was 11?), I didn't get my period unti I was 14...even if they had taught me this stuff, I certainly forgot most of it by the time I needed it!

I was just thinking about this today! I think I'm out this month due to bad timing and I was thinking how on earth did women do it back then! And how on earth are there so many unplanned surprises! I feel like we can't get it right with all this info and planning! Chat Icon

I think so many women do not realize how short one's fertile period really is. Honestly, I didn't know until I started reading and researching ttc. I thought it was more like a week, when it seems like it's really just one or two days tops that you are actually fertile. What was even more surprising to me is that only 20% of perfectly timed bd will result in pg!

I completely agree. I have to admit, I had no idea myself until we decided to TTC.

I would agree that if people were having babies younger years ago (and they were) that there might be fewer problems relating to age as egg quality and quantity decreases as you get older.

To be honest, I didn't know it was such a short amount of time until my best friend got pregnany and she started to educate me on the process. Now that I lurk on the boards for info (DH and I are getting closer to TTC) I am learning so much more.

After finding out that there is such a small window, I was amazed to hear that so many girls/woman have unplanned pregnancies. Its so strange!!!
