I know the "dropping cable" question has been asked before...

We pay $198 per month for Optimum (we have 1 DVR box, 2 additional regular boxes, phone, and internet - we have NO movie channels or On Demand) and we rarely watch but a few channels. Has anyone dropped down to just phone/internet, and pay for just the streaming subscriptions for Showtime or whatever, and then just have Netflix or Hulu for the rest? I'm wondering how much cheaper it could actually be? Maybe I don't even need a landline? It's not even that we can't afford the Optimum I just feel like it is so wasteful so spend close to $200 per month and barely even use any of the channels. My sister has SlingTV and raves about it.

Call them and tell them you are switching to FIOS. Thats what I did and magically my rate dropped by $40 a month. I have 2 cable boxes, no DVR, no movie channels, phone and internet and my bill is now $132 a month.

We pay 80.01 for Internet and the first 12 channels. The only things we miss are sports and The Americans, but not enough to pay more than double.

We don't have Fios in my area so that won't work Chat Icon Freaking Optimum monopoly!

Call them. I was thisclose to cancelling after they took away our movie channels and our bill went to about $200.

Now I pay $166 and have starz, encore, showtime, plus their on demands. Still a lot of $$ but at least we have like 30 additional channels.

In Queens I paid $75 for "turbo" internet and phone. I also had Amazon Prime, Netflix, and Hulu- I had Prime already because of my shopping addiction and Netflix for TV show binge watching, so we just added Hulu when we got rid of cable. We accessed these on PS3, Roku, our smart TV, and our iPad. 3 years with no cable and sports is the only thing DH missed. Highly recommend it! We just signed up with Optimum when we moved and they talked us into this big cable/internet/phone package and I'm sick of it already. I'm just hesitant b/c of DD- she's still too young for TV, though she seems to enjoy watching the colors, but I know in a few months that Nick Jr and Disney are going to be the only channels we watch.

ETA: We "borrowed" my mom's TWC ID to get HBO Go. Chat Icon

I have called and said I was switching to Dish Network and they worked with me a little. It is insane what they charge in Brookhaven!

I want to drop cable too and just keep Internet. We pay 140 right now for Internet and cable with HBO. Is there a way to just pay for HBO or showtime? Is there any service that offers sports? DH didn't want to drop because he is a huge sports fan.

I plan to cancel to drop to just internet if I can convince my DH. It's so pointless. Everything we watch we can stream. Plus we have Amazon Fire and Netflix.

I'm thinking if we drop Optimum TV and phone, we can get the internet for $60 per month, we already have Netflix and Amazon Prime, we get SlingTV for all the other channels we like for $25 per month, and then I can get Showtime streaming for $11 a month - so it would be $96 per month versus $198!

The ONLY reason I still have cable is because of the sports stations, HGTV, and Nick stations. Other than those, its a total waste of money.

I wish you could just choose which channels you WANT and just pay for those.

If you check out SlingTV, you can get HGTV, Food Network, Disney and Nick Jr, AMC, etc...from $20-$40 per month.

Ooh! I did not know that! I will check it out. The local sports are important in my house though too.

I debated about this but I couldn't get the kid channels which I needed but then I think how much cheaper is it really. I feel like just internet is expensive by its self then to get all the channels I want/need I have to pay separate monthly feed while I didn't work out the whole thing I didn't think I would be saving that much money!

I dropped cable over the winter. We have Netflix, Hulu, and Sling Tv. I paid over $200 a month and now pay significantly less. We also get up to channel 21 on our tablets through the optimum app.

We did when we were in NYC because internet only was cheap! Had Netflix and an antennae. Coming back to long island, the antennae signal was very weak and internet only was not a deal. So we are back to a triple play deal. Pouts, our son is older and likes Nick and Disney. When he was little, it was fine that he didn't know those channels

We have Direct TV for the Football Sunday ticket, but I am embarrassed to say that I have Optimum for internet and phone, as well. For just internet and phone with the cable, I pay $100 a month. I don't mind the Direct TV, but trying to resolve the phone and internet to get rid of Cable.
