I can not believe he SAID THAT (housing crisis related)
So a guy who works in the back of our office was telling us something this morning, that truly disgusted me. Next door to my office is a real estate place....well one of the guys in the office approached him and said "hey--how come you don't have a house?" Now this guy, Danny, doesn't make much money and scrapes by...he is a permanent resident here in the U.S. and speaks pretty decent English, but he's still learning everyday.
Danny tells him "Well I can't really afford it--but its okay. One day when I can, we'll think about it."
This is the part that really p*ssed me off. The real estate guy says "Well I could get you into a house, EASY! No money down, roll the closing costs into the mortgage, make the first month's mortgage payment...and then pay NOTHING for the next like 6, 7, maybe up to NINE months! Its easy, you just have to pay 1 payment and then it takes them forever to get you out, and you live most of the year for free! It doesn't affect you that much. And you get a house for awhile and I get to have a commission for selling a house...we both make out great!" 
He's probably counting on the fact that Danny doesn't speak English welll or understand things (they were conversing all in spanish). But regardless...it so sad that there are shady agents like this STILL contributing to the problem of the housing crisis here on Long Island. I wish I could go punch him in his face.

That guy needs to be brought up on charges and have his license taken away.
That is the most shady thing I have ever heard of.

what gets me so mad--is that i'm sure they pull this thing on sooo many people--especially those who don't speak or understand english and just don't know any better. since they are hispanic themselves, it just disgusts me that they are taking advantage of their own people like that versus trying to help them in a legitimate way.

Wow! And unfortunately there are so many people who don't know much about this stuff and will take him up on his "offer". It's sad that people like him try to take advantage of others.

um....that's called a straw buy- it's a felony
you can be arrested for that- is this guy in suffolk? I think they have a mortgage fraud task force set up...I would report this
ETA- all first payment defaults - are investigated now b/c of this practice
(you make 1 payment and default)

can you talk to Danny? tell him you heard what he said and that you want to report him b/c it's fraud?
I would think, even hearing through a third party, that they would investigate.
we do that here with whistleblowers, so I imagine it could be similar on a local level.
but I wouldn't let this slide. how really disgusting.

Kudos to Danny for not buying into what this loser said. I would definitely try speaking to him to see if he'd consider reporting that loser realtor.

that is horrible. I am glad Danny had some sense! this reminds me of a story on CNBC. The guy hardly spoke English and wanted to open a restaurant so a realtor convinced him to get a house so he could take the equity out to open his restaurant. The house he bought was 545K and he only made $900 a week with his wife. And of course that story had a sad ending because the price dropped so now no house and no restaurant. So sad how people take advantage!
