I am so fascinated at the culture we have somehow created...
What an interesting sociological study online forums must be...
We have, as a collective, established unwritten social rules that have manifested organically on here - isn't that amazing?
Many people on here have never even met, yet as soon as you see the screen name - not even the real name - we immediately have a picture in our head of who this person is, and what he/she represents.
We have somehow managed to form seperate groups. There are the cool kids, the dorks, and everyone in between. and at the same time, we have managed to band together and make some significant changes in people's lives...
We have formulated this cyber collective unconscious of pet peeves, acceptable opinions, and topics that can instantaneously ruffle feathers... and have at the same time extended a hand to "one of our own."
All on a website. The rest of the world may not have any idea what we have created on here...
Fascinating....

Just goes to show that people are who they are whether in person or via the internet.
You can try to fake it for a while, but ultimately your true self comes through.

Maybe I haven't been on long enough, but I haven't seen the cool kids vs. the dorks vs. the invisibles theory.
I do see your point about the rules and etiquette but I don't really "picture" anyone here as I respond to them...maybe I'm not as into this site to have the ability to see it as a society or "culture" as other members do. Yet...
I find it highly informative, helpful and entertaining. That's good.

I felt the same way about LiveJournal... except there each member had their own forum (journal) to which other journals can read and comment...
it was cool until you realize cliches are made, communities are started for the purpose to harass.. rumors were spread, and fakes were revealed.
it was a fascinating world to be in!!
