I am really pizzed that my kids school are open right now !!
Not even a 2 hr delay  Am I wrong for being mad? It is nasty out ,my DH has been at work since 5 am and said everyone is sliding around  ! Last yr they did this crapp too ! We have snow days ,so what is the issue

ETA: I looked at news12 and the list of delays and closings and I feel like we are pretty much the only school open right now

I think a lot of schools are open because of regents.
If you feel it isn't safe for them to go in, keep them home.

My daughter already had her ELA testing 2 weeks ago  and they already missed a few days of school b/c they were really sick ! I was just hoping for a 2 hr delay b/c it is supposed to start raining soon Last yr I dont think they even used a snow day

I work for the NYC schools and we never have a snow day. I just went back to work this week and had to call in today. There was no way I was dragging my 3 month old to the babysitter today.

Ugg, I can't imagine having to send my kids out in this weather. My school is closed today. Personally, I'd keep my kids home on a day like today. I'm sure many kids won't be at school today.

We had a 2 hour delay but I chose to stay home today and now I am kicking myself. But I didn't want my kids having to go to daycare at 12 if they were wrong- tough call for me.
I understand what you are saying, you have the option of sending them late, when the roads are better.
The school are in the midst of regents exams and that was a big concern for our district. They sent home a memo yesterday that even if we had a snow day the kids taking the regents would still be expected to come in-- we live in NYS where test scores are more important than the children

I would have drove them later if my dh didn't kill the battery in my minivan  Sorry you have to work for them

Not only is my SD open, but my DS pre-school is open too! I stayed home, but really, if it is that bad out is it worth it for the district to call in all the teachers & students?

I called daycare at 7 this morning and people were already there  I had expected a delay but thankfully got the 2 of us ready this morning, left early and just drove very slow. Only 1 child in her class hadn't shown up yet

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that we are a union free district. I know Pat-Med is the same (union free) and they NEVER close or have delays.
Nicholas didn't go yet..he has a neuro. appt. at 11 so my plan was to send him then pick him up at 10. But since the snow, it will probably take them 2 hours to get there, so they left a little while ago and he'll just go in after.
Oh and the library called and they cancelled Emma's program. So it's safe for the school, not the library

I have no idea to be honest. I think something about being union free makes them not take snow days? I dunno  I think they would rather have that mini vacation they do in May for not using snowdays!

Being a union free district does not mean there is no union. It has to do with whether or not it is a consolidated district, school closing have nothing to do with it, the decision is made by the bus company and the superintendent

There are CSD (central school districts) and UFSD (union free school districts). Smithtown is a CSD which means many towns in one district. If Nesconset had it's own school district, then it would be union free...
And the other thing I wanted to add (because a PP mentioned it) - a school district's decision to close has NOTHING to do with the teachers at all!!!
DD's preschool was open today with no transportation (I usually send her on the bus). I attempted the roads, which although passable, worried me that they would be iced over later, so I turned around and brought her home!!

  Oops!! Didn't know it was in jest - sorry!!! I guess as a teacher it's annoying cause I always think who's going to teach the classes if the teachers can't get there. But then again, it's a job and other people are expected to get to theirs too...

Connetquot had a 2 hour delay but get this- the automated telephone call to let us know came at 11:15 at night. Who calls that late??? We jumped out of bed thinking it was an emergancy only to find out it was th school district.
Well I am glad it wasn't an emergancy at least.......
