How would you respond to this? (racism/election related)

One of the moms from my son's soccer team and his elementary school class just sent me an email about what "bill" Obama would be on.

It started out with photos of the presidents on bills Lincoln on the 5 dollar bill, Hamilton on the 10 dollar bill.

Last was a photo of Obama's head & a donkey's body on "food stamp bill". It had a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken, Kool Aid, ribs & a watermelon on it.

It sickened me. She is the sweetest woman & I can't believe she would think this is acceptable. This isn't really about an election. It's about racism. I can't let something like this go without saying something & need to email her back. Frankly I'm at a complete loss for words right now because I'm seething.

I would respond politely, but curtly...

"Please do not send me email such as this. I find them offensive whether that was the intent or not."

Dear Soccer Mom,

Please stop sending me political emails. While I'm sure you mean no harm, many of them are racially charged and I find them offensive. I do not tolerate racism in my household or anywhere else. I respect that you feel strongly about the election, but I would appreciate it if you didn't forward me emails like this.

Thanks,
Me

I don't know what I would say or if I would say anything.

If I had more balls, I would write back "I'm shocked you're so racist. Please don't subject my son to your hatred."

I would definately ask her if she read that before she forwarded it to you! Some people don't think before they send stuff.

That e-maill was totally out of line!

That's nicer than I would say....I would make sure I state that it IS offensive to me. NO sense beating around the bush, considering she didn't bother with her racist email.

Email her back and say "While you may find this kind of racist joke amusing, I do not...so I ask that you NEVER send me anything so disgusting to me like this ever again."

That's the nicest way I'd put it--but honestly knowing me I 'd probably throw a little quip about how I hope she isn't teaching her child such things...but then again, I'm a b*tch. Chat Icon

I would probably write back something along these lines as well.

I read about that.... some school board leaders in the midwest sent it out to all of the PTA members and some people got into an uproar about it. They confronted the people that sent it, they said they didn't think there was anything wrong with it. Chat Icon

This could be a better approach...

Dear Soccer Mom,

I'm going to assume that you didn't fully read this email and all of the pictures in it before sending it. I understand people feel strongly about the election, but it doesn't seem like you to send out a racist email. I just cannot tolerate racism in any form.

Thanks,
Me

I agree. I would let her know under no uncertain terms that not only do you not want the emails, but how you feel about racism. and racists.

What happened to just ignoring e-mails you don't care for? I get all kinds of stuff but I only read what I chose to!

I think ignoring it sends the message that it's ok. This definitely isn't ok with me.

I think "dont care for" and promoting racism by forwarding this type of email is different.

Re: How would you respond to this? (racism/election related)

I would try to be gentle, because, as we all know, the only way to really get through to people to get them to sit back and think, is to do it in a way that won't make them defensive.

I would say something like, I'm sorry, but I read your email and I found it upsetting. Perhaps you aren't aware, but the stereotypes illustrated in your email are traditional, racist stereotypes that most minorities would find very hurtful. I don't want to encourage this kind of thing for myself, my family or friends, so I ask that you please refrain from sending further emails like that.

Staying quiet is condoning it, which is almost as bad. Personally, I think it's my civil duty to speak up when it comes to matters that are so important.

Re: How would you respond to this? (racism/election related)

I saw this on CNN, it was started by the women's group Chaffey Community Republican Women. They mailed it out to all their members not realizing tht two of their member were black, when they received this, they were obviously offended and call the media. The group's president, said she saw nothign racist about it.

I would post a link to the story but I don't want to promote such ignorance any further.

to answer your question I would not let this go with out speaking out, this person has contact with your son, and I doubt you would be able to feel comfortable not expressing your views to her, so that she does not try to pollute your child's mind as well.

I am not sure exactly what i would say. good luck to you.

This just go to show you racism is EVERYWHERE!!

I would just ask her not to send emails like that to you.. calling her a racist over one email will just open a can of worms to other problems IMO. It is horrible and offensive.. but maybe she didnt think.. some people are just clueless doesnt mean shes a racist.. you did say shes one of the sweetest people and surprised she sent it.

Re: How would you respond to this? (racism/election related)

I definitely think you need to express your disgust with this email, but I know you said that this is a person you're "friendly" with and I'm sure you don't want to make the situation awkward, with the contact you'll need to have with this woman.

I wouldn't even send an email. I'm sure that you generally like this woman, but obviously not this "side" of her. If you're on friendly terms with her, I would mention it to her via telephone or in person, not through email. I think through email you may sound a little too curt and you may start a war of some kind...something you don't want my niece and nephew to get the backlash from. I would say something to her about you thinking it was inappropriate and that it offended you. But then I'd let it go.
