How to wean when I nurse her to sleep?

Still having trouble with weaning here. Haven't successfully gotten rid of any feedings yet. But my biggest concern is the nap and bedtime feedings. Since she won't take a bottle what do I do? Can she find comfort in a sippy cup and fall asleep? or do I need to CIO?

DH tried to put her to sleep for a nap the other day and she screamed hysterically (harder than ever before) on and off for close to an hour. I caved and she fell asleep after 3 minutes of nursing. (through her little sobs)

Will she take a bottle from DH? Sometimes the transition is easier when dad takes over... so far she expects mommy to come feed her and put her to sleep but if you're not around for naptime and bedtime, eventually she'll adapt Chat Icon I'd definitely offer her some milk in the sippy cup just to make sure she isn't hungry, but then, if she doesn't want to eat anymore, have DH put her to sleep whatever way works best (i.e. rocking, walking, or CIO... whatever you're comfortable with)

I used a pacifier because I didn't want to deal with bottle rot.

I agree with Beth - DH would be a better person to help wean her from a nighttime feeding.Chat Icon

My advice...Forget the bottle! Just go to a sippy. Work on non-sleep feedings for now to get her used to the cup. How often does she nurse thru the day? Often? Can you cut those and just give her the cup? That's what I started with Joseph and after about 3 days of that he took a nighttime cup beautifully! Now he gets excited when he sees it for bedtime.

Now if I could just get that to work for middle of the night feedings!Chat Icon

Yep I got the book. Its OK. The part for weaning 1-2 year oplds didn't seem to perytain to her so I went back and read weaning 4-12 month olds and that seems a bit better.

I just feel like I will be throwing her world upside down. It was my decisiontro nurse her to sleep for the past year and now I'm just gonna take that away from her? It just makes me sad Chat Icon

Can you tell me about your bedtime routine? Like when do you give the cup? Does he go straight to bed after or do you read books, brush teeth, In a dimly lit room etc?

I gave Melanie the sippy cup instead and she fell asleep with no problems.

Sorry if I missed this in an earlier post, but why do you have to stop?

I don't really have to stop so I am kind of torn. I would definately like to cut down the feedings. Right now I am still nursing 5x a day and she is 13 months old. She is in the 3rd percentile for weight and I'm trying to get her more interested in real food. Plus I would like to go to a wedding in Ohio next month and didn't want to traumatize her when I left. No one wants to watch her cause she goes bizerk at nap times if I don't nurse her.

I could just try to break her from that habit and nurse her when she wakes up. I think I could leave her then for a day and she would be OK with a cup.

Any thoughts?

Did she resist the first couple of times you tried? I'm gonna try this when I get back home in a few days.( I'm here on LI visiting my fam). Maybe I should have DH do it?

I faced a similar decision, and decided to keep on nursing. She was very, very resistant to my attempts to substitute. I decided that creating weeks of stress for both her and me while we tried to "retrain" her weren't worth it for the one or two days she'd be watched by someone else.

Are you talking about going away from her for overnight for the wedding or just the day?

I would have to fly out 1st thing in the morning but I think I could nurse her in the am. I wouldn't get back till the next afternoon. So basically a 24 hour period. I feel totally selfish about going to this wedding but I new about it when I was PG and said to the bride and myself that of course I could come....sidney would be over 1 by then and it wouldn't be a problem. So I guess I'm just a little frustrated since I was looking forward to this wedding and now its a big trauma and I probably won't go. ( I know...I sound like such a brat Chat Icon )

I understand how frustrated you feel very, very well! Give weaning a try -- maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones who it goes easy for!

Well....so far NO good. I was on LI this past week visiting my fam and thought it would be the perfect opportunity to give her the cup throughout the day cause she would be so excited/distracted to nurse. Well I was right about her not wanting to stop playing to nurse but she also didn't want to stop to take the cup either. So by the end of the trip she was waking up every 2-3 hours at night to nurse and cause she wasn't drinking throughout the day I went ahead and fed her. Now we are home and have to start CIO again.

So I've decided to put the weaning on hold for now but my supply is all messed up. When she wants to nurse now at about noon and 3:30 I've got practically nothing. ( and she does not have the patience to hang out on the boob for to long without reward.)
Ho hum....I guess I'll start eating oatmeal. Chat Icon Chat Icon

No. I started by giving her the sippy during the day, and I nursed at night just a few more days. Then I had DH give her the sippy, and that was it, she switched right over. Good luck! Chat Icon

What cup do you use? Does she fall asleep drinking from it or do you put her to bed awake? (did you use to nurse her to sleep?)
