I'd put myself somewhere between moderately and very.

Not at all. I wasn't raised in a religious household and, I hope this doesn't offend but it is my opinion, organized religion freaks me out. I'm all for spirituality and believing in whatever you want but I don't like when being told what to believe.

Just because I'm not religious doesn't mean I don't believe in anything. I believe in learning and wisdom, I believe in human kindness and morality, I believe that we're all connected and then there is a basic goodness in all of us. In my opinion, my belief in humanity is not inferior to your belief in God.

I honestly am not one to judge anyone, but I do find it kind of sad that the MAJORITY of the votes are for "not religious at all". Don't we all need a little something to believe in?Chat Icon

ETA - I voted "moderately religious" simply because i don't attend mass, but Do go to church and pray on my own time, I believe the Catholic teachings, but disagree on a few of their stances (ex: gay marriage, etc)

I picked moderately religious. I'm Catholic. I haven't been to church in about 1.5 months. DH & I are going to start going back every week this upcoming Sunday.

We follow the traditions (no meat on Fridays during Lent for example), we both take something positive out of each and every Mass we go to, and we make sure to celebrate the religious significance of Christmas & Easter. We both pray frequently. I said moderately as opposed to very because I don't agree with every single church teaching (for example, I support gay marriage), so I don't follow all of the rules of the religion. However, I think I'm a tiny bit more than moderate.

I'm extremely spiritual though. Like I said, I pray frequently. However, I also feel very in touch with the spirit world and those who have passed on.

I was an atheist for about 5 years though.

Funny-to me you would be "very religious"

It seems like less and less people have religion in their lives nowadays......I find it sad (and I don't mean this in an insulting way to anyone!)....it gives me so much peace that I can't imagine not having it and feel bad for those who do not experience it.

I am not responding to be defensive or to start any debate...just to give you my perspective.

I can completely understand your feelings b/c I have people in my life that feel the same.

For me I was raised with a lot of religion and for me that made me have a lot of fear and guilt. For me it never brought me peace. Over the past 10-15 years I have moved more and more away from the church and now completely away from any kind of religion and I feel that I finally have peace in my life. I am content to raise my children without God and religion. What they decide as adults is their free choice but for my DH and I we don't wish to influence their decisions.

Again, this is no kind of attack on religious people or the peace they feel from it. I just wanted to explain how I get peace from not having religion b/c of the unrest religion, God and the church brought me.

I agree and can relate to this.

Yeah, I could definitely see this as being at least a somewhat subjective issue. I don't categorize myself as very religious because I don't follow all the rules/have all the same political views + I'm comfortable with interpreting parts of the Bible myself as opposed to just listening to what someone tells me (although I generally tend to agree with a Catholic interpretation since it is more symbolic than literal, and that's how I tend to read in general).

But I can totally see why someone would see I'm very. Chat Icon

Now that's interesting because to me, you can be "religious" ie. believeing in a higher power strongly without following someone else's rules....It seems that most are interpreting this like you-Go to church, believe EVERYTHING said there=religious

Religion doesn't make the world a better place, religious tolerance does. Chat Icon Chat Icon

THIS!!!!!!!

To answer the question: I'm not religious at all. I do believe in a higher power and I believe heavily in doing the right thing and living your life as a good person so that you can live eternally with your loved ones. But I don't agree with how the Catholic Church operates. I think it's unnatural to expect priests and nuns to deny themselves very basic human practices...and we see all too often in the papers how THAT works out in the end. But that's just the tip of the iceberg for me.

I think we'll start checking out some of the non-denominational churches in our area, because we do want our children to have a sense of who God is.
