How long do you keep old pay stubs in your files?
I'm cleaning out the filing cabinet today!  How far back do you save things like pay stubs? I'm thinking a year?

I think 2 or 3 years, which is probably too long - I do save the end of the year ones for a while - and keep them with my tax returns.

I had an arguement the other day about this with DH and my Mom. I said 1 year, and they say forever, cause you can always get audited. But I figured you would just need your W-2's not every pay stub. I have a friend who throws them in the trash the second she gets them though!

I don't save them for long periods of time either. I didn't think it was too "smart" to keep all those stubs laying around (or filed) with my soc all over them. I thought I was doing a GOOD thing by disposing them monthly.

I keep them for a month and then chuck them. The only thing I would need one for is a loan and then it would have to be a recent paystub, so I don't see the sense in having them hanging around.

Audits don't go back forever, though. I think it's 5 years (but I forget).

I keep the 2006 ones till i file my 2006 tax return. i just make sure that the last one of 2006 matched the w-2 i got.
