How do you feel about guns in your house?

DH bought a rifle at d!cks sporting goods and had it stored in our basement, without a lock, sitting out in the open.

We have 2 small children (19 mos and 6 weeks).

He didn't even TELL me he bought it!

I am enraged right now. I asked him to return it and he won't. He said he bought it because he doesn't want to carry his gun to and from work (he is in law enforcement) and still wants to have a gun at home.

He says he can "lock it up", but I really don't see how he can, the thing is THAT big. Chat Icon

I am so mad....... How do you feel about guns in the house?

Re: How do you feel about guns in your house?

I have absolutly no problem *IF* it has a trigger lock and there is no ammo anywhere.

For him to have the gun without a lock is careless at best, especially him being in law enforcement.

I would also have no problem showing the guns to the kids and having them grow up witha healthy respect.

But its the no trigger lock I have a problem with.

Re: How do you feel about guns in your house?

For me and DH... We wouldn't have a gun, but thats b/c we don't know how to use them (maybe have only gone shooting a few times)

Maybe if my DH was in law enforcement and knew how to use the gun and if it could be locked and my DC wouldn't know it was there... then Maybe I would be ok with it?

But IDK b/c I guess I would have to be in that situation...

Re: How do you feel about guns in your house?

If my husband bought a gun and put it in our house without telling me, there would be a war, no pun intended. There are gun safes in all sizes, some as big as refrigerators.

Where there are no guns, there can be no gun accidents.

I would flip my sh*t. If he's in law enforcement, SHAME ON HIM, he knows the dangers and proper storage requirements.

They sell gun cabinets that would fit a rifle. Get one TODAY, and lock it. Having that around with a toddler is a recipe for disaster; but bringing it home without your knowledge combined with his blase attitude about it is actually MORE disturbing to me than the gun itself.

I would be more ****** he just bought it.

As far as in my house. My stepdad is a cop they were always around. My father had us a gun range shooting a 12 Gage at 14 so I do know how to shoot them I don't think I want them in MY house unless locked up and in a secure place. Dh would never go for it. Never.

I am fine with having guns around when they are stored responsibly and major precautions are taken to make sure there are no accidents. What you are describing sounds like something really bad waiting to happen.

ITA. I cannot believe how "casual" he is about this.

I have no problem with guns in a house as long as it taken seriously. Locked at all times, etc...

Kids are curious by nature. You can teach them but accident happens.

Being in Law Enforcement he really should know better than leaving a riffle in the open.

That's completely irresponsible!

That's exactly how accident happens. Parents/family who do what he did.

Re: How do you feel about guns in your house?

DH wants to get his gun permit for his part time job and I'd be ok with it being in the house, BUT he would absolutely have to tell me if he was buying one, especially if we had kids.

That would make me mad that he didn't discuss with me first but I guess theres not much to do about it now. I would request that he store the ammunition and gun locked in separate areas of the house.

Re: How do you feel about guns in your house?

I would be upset w/him not storing it properly. My husband is in LE also and we have many guns in our home but they are all in a gun cabinet which is always locked. The best option is a simple trigger lock and if you dont want to go so far as a safe they make cases to fit rifles which can be locked. I have no problems w/a gun in my home but I always make sure they are stored properly.

Don't allow them. Neither DH or I grew up with them, we're not in law enforcement, nor do we don't hunt. We have no reason for them to be in our house.

Not allowed in my house ever.

DH was in the Marines.... still wouldnt allow it.

That being said, my dad is a hunter and to this day (I'm 29), I have no idea where he keeps his rifles and guns.

DH is a police officer and big hunter. He has many guns. We have a small safe and a big tall one as well. They are both locked and then locked in the boiler room that is never open.

He is going to teach the boys to shoot at a young age and teach them gun responsibility, and I am all for it.

When kids are curious, there are problems. I believe teaching them will make them not think they are "cool", nor fear them.

Re: How do you feel about guns in your house?

I grew up with guns in the house but they were always stored properly and safely (in a locked safe). My brother and I were taught about gun safety growing up. I would have a problem with my DH not speaking to me about that decision first. But I would have no problem with a gun in my home, in fact it's on my list of things to do to get a pistol license, as long as it was stored properly. If I had small children I would especially keep it in a locked safe, unloaded, ammo kept separate, etc...

Re: How do you feel about guns in your house?

I probably wouldn't worry too much. Because he's in LE I'm sure he knows better than to keep it loaded and out in the open.
Also, it is possible to lock a rifle up. If you don't have a rifle cabinet it can be kept in a locked case and on a top shelf in a closet. And, unloaded , with the ammo in a separate case.

Re: How do you feel about guns in your house?

We have a gun in the house - so it doesn't bother me at all.

But in your situation, your DH is being very irresponsible and that is just plain DANGEROUS.

ETA: i Just read that you said he's in law enforcement. w t ffffffff!

My DH is a police officer and no way, no how would he ever be that irresponsible. That is just bad gun safety and I can't believe he thought it was okay to purchase a rifle without telling you and then not secure the weapon. Unreal!

Re: How do you feel about guns in your house?

I grew up in a home with guns. I learned to respect them and care for them from a very young age.

My BIL has guns (and other weapons) now (he's a hunter). He keeps them secured under lock and key - and he keeps the ammunition separately under lock and key. It's the only reason I am okay going over there with my children. But - to be honest - I would still feel uncomfortable having my kids there without me.

I don't have them in my own home because there simply is no need. They frighten me.

As long as your husband is responsible with the weapon, it should be fine. I'd insist on him getting a gun cabinet with a lock and also that he lock the ammunition up as well.

Re: How do you feel about guns in your house?

If it is locked up, ammo is somewhere else, and the person is trained on how to use the weapon, I have no problem.

That weapon should be locked up, and you can get a safe large enough for it. You cannot have it out with young kids around like that. Kids are too curious.

Re: How do you feel about guns in your house?

I grew up in a home with guns, so it doesn't phase me. In your specific situation I would be upset that a) he bought the gun without consulting you; and b) has it out in the open when you have young children who are at their most curious age. If you’re ok with him keeping the gun, make sure you get a gun cabinet ASAP. They do have cabinets that will hold a rifle. Keep the bullets separate from the gun.

Re: How do you feel about guns in your house?

I don't have a problem with it if the proper precautions are taken: locked away, safety on and ammo stored elsewhere (Hidden and out of reach). I'd honestly be uncomfortable if DH bought one and didn't discuss it with me first though, especially since we have two small kids Chat Icon
