Police are investigating the death of an infant who may have been accidentally smothered by its mother at a West Side apartment complex Saturday.
Police responded to the Castleridge Apartments in the 8000 block of West Military Drive around 1:30 p.m. Saturday after construction workers changing windows at the complex entered a residence and discovered an infant's body underneath its incapacitated mother.

“We were tapping on the mother's shoulder to try and wake her up, but she was moaning and couldn't really wake up,” a shaken construction worker who asked not to be identified said. “The baby was already dead.”

The woman, whose name hasn't been released, was taken to a local hospital, police said. Police said the woman was “incoherent” when she was found.

“We are waiting for the medical examiner's office to make a determination about the cause of death for the child,” San Antonio Police Department spokesman Mathew Porter said. “If the mother played a contributing factor into the infant's death, there's a possibility she could face charges.”

Neighbors described the mother as a friendly woman in her late 20s with three other children. They said she was well-known in the complex and had given birth to her latest child, a baby girl, only weeks before.

“She's a real good mom,” said Terry Gonzalez, 40, a friend who lives in the complex, adding that she'd never seen the woman intoxicated. “She'd even watch my boys if I asked her. I trust her.”
