Has anyone submitted a claim to homeowners insurance for mold?

How did you go about doing it? We have mold in the downstairs bathroom (Again Chat Icon) from a leaking pipe in the upstairs bathroom (that is right above the downstairs bathroom). We had the same problem last year and now a different section of the old pipe is leaking, not the part we fixed. When we repaired it last year a close friend (a contractor) fixed it with DH and he did not charge us for the work. We cannot afford to pay out of packet for a pipe overhaul, so I was thinking...this is WHY I have homeowners right?

WWYD?

We had a leak last year. We just called up Travelers and they sent a guy out. We had it fixed before he got there, since our upstairs bathroom was leaking into the kitchen and we had a newborn in the house. He cut us a check on the spot to reimburse us for the plumber and money to resheetrock, respackle and repaint the room. It was a really easy process, I was very impressed.

The only downside, when we moved we wanted to keep Travelers, but they declined us a new policy, and one of the reasons was the leak in our old place.

Did you have problems finding another company to cover you b/c of submitting a claim? I heard (not sure if true) that if the claim is more than $10K, they can drop you?

The claim was about $2,500-3,000.

We had a huge problem finding insurance, but that's more due to the fact that we bought about 1000 feet from the water. Travelers was the only one that brought up the leak, the other big guys (State Farm, Allstate, etc) all cited the usual reasons - no longer writing policies on LI, too close to the water, etc.

ETA: I think a lot of the major carriers are choosing not to renew LI policies due to the increased hurricane risk. I don't think they would drop you for a normal repair issue like a leak.

Re: Has anyone submitted a claim to homeowners insurance for mold?

I submitted a claim to clean up mold from a leak that was from the slab under my sink. In my case i had to replace the WHOLE cabinet and the wood next to it..PIA!

DO NOT TELL THEM IT WAS FIXED previously!! Just say you noticed mold for the 1st time and someone came out and said this needs to get done and say you want someone to come look at it and repair it and the damage it caused..also stress you have a child and do not want them around water damage.

Also take into consideration what your deductible is...mine was 1000K, and if the work is going to cost 1100 bucks it's not worth putting the claim in.
