Dh bought my ring through Kay’s and with them
You can upgrade and they give you full value of what you pay for your original ring
With Kay you have to spend double though (unless they changed that policy recently). I had a right hand ring that I upgraded a couple years ago, but that was only $700. So I had to pick something that was $1400 to get the trade-in.
It worked out nicely for that, but the policy kind of sucks.
I have a diamond pendant my ex bought me that I no longer wear that was $3500 from Kay. I would love to trade it in but that would mean I have to pick something that is 7k. So that means spending an additional $3500.

You're probably better off just upgrading the setting and keeping the same diamond. If you have a solitaire, adding side stones or an eternity band will bling it up.
Otherwise, if you are set on getting a bigger diamond, I'd just turn your current diamond into a pendant necklace.

i wanted to but apparently the setting wouldn't allow it. so we go on vacations instead
