Has anyone had their tubes tied?

If you know you are done having kids...has anyone had this done? DH and I decided a long time ago, this was going to be our 1 and only child (DH has a daughter from a previous marriage, who is 10 and she lives with us), so in essence...we will have 2 girls.

I am 32 and DH is 42 and he says he is done..since there is no way I can gurantee if I have a second it will be a boy Chat Icon But...now that I spoke to the doctor about it, I'm not so sure, and DH doesn't want me to do it, if I'm not comfortable with it. He said if he was 5 years younger, we would definitely go for a second.

My concern is...now, with the 10 year old, all we hear all day long is I'm bored, there's nobody to play with, there's nothing to do..blah blah blah Chat Icon I'm thinking that when this one is 10...we will hear this all over again, because although there are now 2 of them...the age difference is so great, that they really won't be very into playing with each other. If we were to have a second...it would be failry soon, so the 2 would be close in age, and be playmates.

Any advice/suggestions?

This is obviously a hard call for anyone else to make for you. Anyone having only 1 child will tell you those benefits, anyone wanting more will tell you those advantages. I personally want to have 2 or 3 close in age so they can play and be friends.

As for the tubes being tied, its much more serious for women than men. My friend is a surgeon and told me that a vasectomy is a non-invasive 10 minute procedure (which is frequently reversible). She swears by this and suggests not having women's tubes tied - too many complications, scar tissue can form, etc.

This is why I have been preparing DH for the snip snipChat Icon

In all seriousness, I was thinking about this after I have number 2. I would want to get in done immediately after the baby is born. But it is major surgery, and it hard to reverse i have read, scar tissue, etc.
I am not sure I could deliberately make myself infertile, it's too permanent for me.
It's a really big decision that I think only you, DH and your dr can make. I know when I start second guessing things, decisions, it means I not ready.

If you are on the fence about it I would say use other forms of BC until you make more of a decision about it. This is your first child and so you never know what you may be feeling a few years from now on the issue. After going through the terrible 2's you may say NEVER AGAIN or you may start longing for a little one again!!

We had thought about both of these things but then I decided that I LOVE having my period for only 2 days a month and will stay on the bcp until menopause. I can not go through the bad cramps and 7-14 days anymore.

If you're not 100% sure and your DH doesn't want you to do it, why don't you consider an IUD? You're protected for at least 5 years (maybe longer) with no fuss and depending on which one you choose, no hormones. I'm getting one soon.

IMO, you are a bit young for a tubal, you never know if you may change your mind in a couple of years. You never know what may happen. And you still have quite a few childbearing years left.

It's not the DH is against it...he just doesn't want me to feel pressure to do it because he is the one saying he doesn't want any more kids. Which...I was fine with, until yesterday.

Re: Has anyone had their tubes tied?

I was all set to get one, but am now having baby #2 at a Catholic hospital so I can't get it done. (I am having a scheduled c-section)

My DH is going to get snipped instead. I am however 38 and we know for sure that this is our last child because of our ages and because I am diabetic. I think at 32 if you can hold out and wait I would. You are still young and maybe after your DH has this little bundle with you he may change his mind and want another oneChat Icon

Re: Has anyone had their tubes tied?

I am 32 and my husband is 41 I have a step daughter 14 and twin girls 5 1/2 months and I still feel young enough to have more. You are still young and you never know what can happen in life. If you don't feel comfortable then don't do it because it's permanent....good luck!
