Grrr to late b-day's...

I called soccer tots today (yes Im still trying to figure out what activities we are doing this fall) and was getting info on the program which start 9/13.

She mentions the children have to be 3 yrs of age.

RJ turns 3 on 9/30.

When I explain that RJ is not yet 3, she replies that they would have to put him in the 2 yr old class.

Now- I know every mom thinks their child is "advanced" but truthfully my child's physical skills are VERY VERY advanced (at 1 month shy of being 3- Rj can roller skate, play hockey, baseball- not tee-ball but baseball, dribble and run with a basket ball)
Academically he is prob an avg 3- but physically his skills are super strong.

I mean, we are talking about a child who has been running since 9 months old!

So please tell me why my son should go into a 2yr old program for 16 weeks when 14 of those weeks he will be 3yrs of age...

We are talking 2 classes people...

The women was quite nasty and didn't care what I had to say.

I know my child gets bored really easy, if something isn't challenging enough he will not cooperate.

I feel like this is going to be an on-going trend because he is a late b-day...

Anyone else experience this?

Honestly, next time, lie. I lie all the time about how old Ava is and say she's 3 because she really honestly likes to be with older children since her verbal skills are so advanced. I always say she was born in 05 instead of 06. I say have your hubby call back to sign him up and lie. Dishonest? Yes. Do I feel bad? No.Chat Icon

I'd fight it. The cut off in my district growing up with Nov. 1. My birthday is Nov. 2. My parents fought it and I got in.

If all else fails, go with Rachel's planChat Icon

I'm chairperson to a local soccer league here. They do hear from a lot of parents how talented the kids are.

Consider this - while he knows how to play soccer, he probably doesn't know strategy or the rules of the games. That would be one reason why you'd want him with his age group. Later when he's excelling, he'll move up.

Personally, I think you're better off playing with his grade level. It's not just about soccer skills. It's making friends with his classmates & socializing.

Not sure what league it is, but I wouldn't bother lying. We request birth certificates for a reason.Chat Icon

I honestly dont think it matters.
Soccer will be a new sport to him anyway. If he was Pro at this then I would say you should be concerned. Right now, I would just do it for the socialization part of it and for him to learn team playing skills.

Re: Grrr to late b-day's...

I'm sorry, but I'm really with Maris on this one. There's a HUGE difference between a kid who's going to be 3 in two weeks and a kid who just turned 2 two weeks ago. I cannot imagine how being in a class with kids that are so much younger can really benefit a kid that will be 3 for a majority of the time he's in the classChat Icon I guess that's just me.

But the 3yr old program IS his age group...

There are 16 sessions and he will be 3 yrs for 14 of those sessions- why should he be with 2 yr olds???

Whats gonna change in my child those 1st 2 sessions????

I mean for more than 3/4 of the class he will be an entire year older than everyone else...???

Rj gets socialization at school, Im doing this as a sport.

Thats like Rj and Gilly playing sports together- there is a huge difference between the 2.

Rj will understand running with the ball, and trying to get a goal- where as Gillly would just run around- KWIM?

Exactly...

I KNOW my child, and if he is not stimulated enough this will not work out...

Take out my theory on him being "advanced" we are talking that he is an entire year older than the other kids...

We are talking 2 sessions- not half of them... KWIM?

Is there any way you can go look in on a class thats going on right now? Maybe take a look at the 2 yr. old class and the 3 yr. old class. The 2's may not be as "babyish" as you think, KWIM? And if it is, and they won't budge, just take him somewhere else. Because, then wouldn't this be a problem next year too? Like, he'll have to do the 3 yr. old class even though he is turning 4?? Good luck! Chat Icon

But then the kids parents that are 3 going on 4 could say the same thing about Ryan being in there class. Obviously you have to do whats best for you and what you want for Ry. IMO...put him in another program bc it doesnt look like they are giving in.

I am having the same problem with signing Amanda up for gymnastics, however, they told me once she turns 3, then she can go into the 3 year old class so 2 months in the 2 year old class and then on to the 3 year old class. Will soccer let you do the same thing?

totally. We just started a class at the Y and Grace should be with the 8mth-24 month group. There is NO ONE her age in the group- it is all babies. I have nothing in common with the moms and she has nothing in common with the kids. Plus she is too rough for this baby bunch.

I am just bringing her to the older class next week. In fact, the instructor asked me too since she is too wild.

No they wont move him mid session... which makes NO sense because once he is 3- he should be with the 3 yr old group.

I see what you are saying BUT at 2yrs old- some children may not even talk, and or just learned to walk a few months previous to that.

I think there is a much bigger difference between a 2-3 yr old than a 3-4 yr old.

Re: Grrr to late b-day's...

I also wanna add- that Rj is a member of "my gym" when I was on the phone with them yesterday, we discussed different programs for the fall...

They know Ryan and have seen his capabilities and agreed he was bored in the 2.5-3.5 yr old class- they suggested me moving him to the 3.5-4.5 yr old class...

They also were willing to put him in a 4yr old karate class..

Im not making this up...Anyone who works with kids, knows that when a child isn't being stimulated enough, or engaged in the activity they will lose their cooperation. An instructor wouldn't want to lose anyone participation because they could lose control of the class...

I agree but everyone is going to turn 3 some time & they do need to make a cut-off. Later on, they will bump him up by skill.

I agree they should do it by what the majority of the age he'll be playing.

Maris - is he going to be in school with the 2 year old or the 3 year olds? Joseph is a Sept baby too & we're usually in the same boat. It was frustrating for me when he was left behind in the 2 year old program at daycare too. But he was 2 years old.

Do you have to sign up for the 1st session? Can you register beginning the second session and then he would be 3? I understand where you're coming from as I know our DC have always been the youngest in their class and have thrived.

In Sept he is going to the 3yr old program.

Currently he is one of the youngest and there are quite a few kids in his class who are ALREADY 3 and arent even moving up...

IDK, I cant see my very well spoken, active, potty trained, 2 weeks shy of 3yr old in a class with a child who dosent talk, has been walking for a short period of time, who is going through seperation anxiety and still wearing diapers...

The last thing I need is regression....

Is it September or January and that's it or could you for example join in October and he would be 3?
