For your birthday if you had the choice..
Of going on a short ( 3 night) vacation to Vegas OR taking the approx $1500 it would cost ( between airfare and hotel not including all the spending money) and get yourself a really nice gift what would you pick??
I am so the " I rather have something $$ that I can use for years"
But a little getaway does sound good right now!!
Its also a really hectic time to travel. The ONLY 3 nights we can get away are from the Day after Xmas - the day before new years eve

I would pick the trip. After having my son, I realize how precious time alone with DH is.
I actually went to Vegas 3 yrs ago during that same time frame. We left Dec 26 and came back Dec 30. We spent no where near $1500. For both Airfare and hotel we spent $450/pp and we stayed at MGM Grand. We booked a standard room and then upgraded to a larger room when we got there for $20/night.
Granted it was 3yrs ago and airfare from Chicago to Vegas maybe cheaper than departing from NY, but I think you can spend a little less (unless you're trying to stay at Bellagio or Mandalay Bay).

I cannot tell you how important it is to me to have regular vacations...
I know that logically I could use the $$ more, but time away is invaluable

Same here - you can get a 4 or 5 night cruise for much cheaper than that, and I think a cruise would be a lot more relaxing that Vegas!
I just looked into a 4 or 5 night carib cruise, leaving out of Fort Lauderdale. It's about $400 a person, and that includes MEALS!

I think this is what I would do too.
DH and I have travelled a few times between Christmas and New Years and actually have really enjoyed it a lot. It seems like things are not so hectic, because Christmas is over and we left before the New Year's Eve crowd started checking in.

I would love to do a cruise but I can't leave before xmas and do not want to be away from my son on new years eve so we only have those 3 nights and 4 days.
Unless we just go the first week of January instead.
