For the men on the board, or anyone that may have some insight to the male psyche

Why is it that men cannot focus on more than 1 thing at a time? And I mean this with all seriousness.....

We are currently purchasing and investment property, but at the same time "should" be renovating our kitchen.

I told DH that the summer is the perfect time to do the kitchen, and moreso because the baby will be here in November. I also have all these businesses waiting on me for answers because we went looking and got estimates on appliances and countertops.

He does not want to be bothered with making the kitchen decisions until the house stuff is taken care of. Well, there's nothing left to do but WAIT for paperwork to get done, and go to closing, SO WHAT IS THE BIG PROBLEM?

i agree with your DH

if you take the two side by side, the purchase takes precedent over the renovation IMO

especially since the real estate market is constantly changing, he needs his full focus on that to make sure you don't get screwed

especially at this stage of dotting the i's and crossing the t's. Nothing can be overlooked.

There's always time to renovate.

I agree with most of what you said, but if most of the RE paperwork is done, ie. locking in our rate, contacting our attorney, obatining insurance, just waiting for the closing date, why can't we at least make decisions as to our home renovation?

He wants me to make all the RE phone calls anyway!

And in all honesty, no, there isn't always time to renovate.....not when there's a baby on the way. I told him I refuse to live without a kitchen in the winter with a newborn. ANd this renovation will take time as he's doing it himself.......and no, we can't wait till next year!

We can only multitask at certain things. Ie....watching football and drinking beer. With all joking aside possibly he is nervous about the expenditures with the house and doesn't want to think about the expenses with the kitchen. I would sit down and speak with him and ask him if that could be the case. We can multitask when we need to.

yeah, the multi-tasking thing isn't so good with DH. He's the same exact way. And, if I don't do it, it won't get done.

I tend to make the decisions about most things for that reason.

Maybe you take the bull by the horns so to speak?

There has actually been scientific research that shows that a woman's brain is much more efficient at multi-tasking.

I'm much better at multi-tasking than a lot of women. I think people just use that excuse. It's gender steroetyping, and I'm suing! Chat Icon

I think he's trying to focus on one project at a time, and is worried about getting overwhelmed with two projects at once. They sound like big projects, so it's more than just multi-tasking, it's multi-project coordination.

sorry- I know this post is just for the men on the board-but I peeked!Chat Icon

Just a suggestion....because you are expecting soon-if possible, why dont you just go ahead and do the kitchen planning w/out DH, if he gives you the OK.
Make him think you dont want to "stress him out with all he has on his plate"Chat Icon (sorry guys!) so you "are going to go ahead and take care of it yourself!"

trust me-you DONT want to be in the middle of constuction-esp a kitchen-w/a newborn...I did it & it isnt easy. Esp in the winter. Also keep in mind that cabinets can take up to 4 months to come in. Thats about how long mine took. Good luck!

man cannot multitask- their brains aren't wired for it...
this has been proven- they just don't have neurological pathways that are complex enough to deal with multiple things @ one time.
this is why they were the hunters- they go out- chase after ONE thing- kill it & bring it home.
Women- well- we are natural multitaskers- but we had to gather the food, cook the food, watch the kids, etc etc- so a million things at once....
it's been like this since we've been on 2 legs...

If the renovations involve any kind of tearing down and replacing sheetrock, I'd get moving before the baby is born.

Our builder was renovating his home (he lives across the street from us) and wouldn't complete his addition until his twins turned a year old. He told us that the dust from the sheetrock, etc. is bad for their developing lungs.

So how do you explain that I can cook dinner, do laundry and help my daughter with her homework or some other project being school is out all at the same time??? I think it's this kind of assumption that gets people in trouble in the first place. Just treat every individual on his or her own merits and stop generalizing.

I have to say....my DH is better than me at multitasking. It def depends on the person...

Re: For the men on the board, or anyone that may have some insight to the male psyche

I've met way too many women who have a hard time walking and chewing gum at the same time! I'm sure we all know people like that.... Not all women can multi-task, and not all men are single-task only. Just like there are plenty of women who race cars, are great at math, and can build a house. I think a lot of it stems from the fact that if guys can get away with only doing one thing at a time, why not? Most women think they *have* to do everything at once (OK, some do, but not all women have to do everything at once). Are women more capable, or just feel a need to do it? And, if they do multi-task, are they doing a better job of doing a dozen things at once, then doing one at a time, but putting more thought and effort into each thing?

Not necessarily what I think, just throwing some thoughts out there to ponder over.
