Yeah they can be covered but half the time I don't wear my rings because I'm working with my hands a lot at work and don't want them ruined its out in the open... Never had a comment made to me... Ever

I think it really depends on the kind of tattoo on the hand - if it is a ring finger tattoo, that's relatively small, and most of the time unnoticeable. I think what some might have been thinking of are those tattoos on the main part of the finger, like the guy from that chopper show where it says "pay up" or something like that, where they are very large and bold... that does have a negative stigma. Right or wrong, that's the way many people view it. But something along the lines of what you have, is very very different.

Chat Icon I have to agree, if I interviewed someone with "pay up" written across their fingers I'd have a hard time with that. THAT is poor judgement, imo.

If it were small and could be covered by a ring if necessary, I don't see the problem.

Finger Tattoos?

I don't see what the big deal is - she's a receptionist not the doctor. I'm sure the tattoos don't change how good or bad she is in her position.

It could. Not her ability, but it could affect the way patients view her which could, in turn, affect how well she can do the job. If the main clientele of the practice is elderly, yes, it's going to have a negative impact. Doesn't matter if it's right or wrong, it's just reality.

Would I love to have bright pink hair again? Yes. But in my position and profession it would never fly. I would get ZERO respect from doctors, patients, and colleagues... But I'm the same person with the same skill set... But my job performance would be hindered.

And to the person who would judge me to think it looks like I went for jail just remember that I care for adults with developmental disabilities and made a difference in hundreds of lives... And do a job most wouldn't because of the intensity. I'm sure the families I have helped over the years think of me as a good person- not a jail bird. Hope you never need someone's help that has a finger tattoo

Human service fields tend to much more liberal in their acceptance of body art, tats, piercings, self-expression in general. Working in the field myself I don't bat an eyelash at those things but the corporate world is much different. An ex was a tattoo artist and said people often came in specifically saying they would need the ability to cover for work. So while I don't care or think it is unprofessional, I do understand other people's POV on it. A doctor's office can go either way but generally speaking I think they want their front desk staff to give a certain impression that finger tats *may* not deliver.

Agreed.

And there is still the corporate world in many places that provide services to people in need.

You don't generally see tattoo-wearing folks in those roles.

Just say in'.

I am actually surprised by some of these comments. I don't have any tattoos myself but I think if someone had a small, tasteful ring tattoo or even a wrist tattoo it isn't a big deal. If I were in a position to hire someone that certainly wouldn't deter me from offering them a job if they had the proper qualifications. I think if you're dressed professionally, carry yourself well, and have a great resume most of the time nobody will even notice your tattoos..................so long as you're not covered head to toe in them! ***I know the question was about finger tattoos, but the point it, don't be so quick to judge someone based on what they do to their body.

As others have mentioned, I think it depends on the placement, size and what the tattoo is. Fingers don't hold ink very well and end up looking messy/blurry after awhile, perhaps that's why some are so quick to judge.

Finger Tattoos?

It isn't a matter of right or wrong, she asked if it matters and it does, some people do judge and it can hurt you, even if that isn't right it happens so nay on the finger tattoo if you don't want to deal with the consequences

Re: Finger Tattoos?

I think it depends on what it is. Something on your wedding finger like a tattooed wedding band is different then let's say a skull and crossbones. I probably wouldn't get anything on my hands though.

I also worked with the developmentally disabled population and I do agree they don't require as high level of professional dress/look as opposed to other fields. So depending on your career/lifestyle also plays a factor if you would want to get one on your hand.

Thank you - I was just about to write the exact same thing.
I'm not saying it's RIGHT, I'm not saying it's a reflection of any person's ability to do their job, or of a person themselves - ........and IN a position, no one is going to fire you after seeing your tatoo, or tell you to cover it up if it's someplace that's acceptably exposed ..........HOWEVER, for someone who's on the fence, and asking the question 'do you think I should get a tatoo on X part of my body' ........well, I say if you're on the fence about it, step off and find a differnt place for it - one you wont 'worry' about other people judging you for. Because if it's in your head before you've PERMANENTLY put it on your body, chances are you're going to regret it. So just do it somewhere else.

This is exactly the point I was trying to make.

Yes, I get the photo, however, when he is in the office setting ALL OF HIS TATTOOS ARE COVERED. That is the point. Because if he walked in to an exam room and there was a patient there who had negative thoughts of tattooed people, and his tattoos were out, it could absolutely affect his ability to care for the patient.

Re: Finger Tattoos?

My personal opinion is that it SHOULDN'T matter.

I have a visible tattoo and work in a professional environment. I COULD cover it if I had to, but I choose not to. No one has expressed any care/concern about it.

However, people absolutely do judge (as evidenced from this thread). I can see problems if the tattoo was offensive or contained explicit material. To me, that is the same as wearing a shirt with such material to work; it's a poor judgment call.

Otherwise, I don't understand why people think tattoos affect professionalism. It seems rather pedantic.

Re: Finger Tattoos?

I agree with the above posters that it SHOULD NOT matter -- but it's just, all too often, people will make it matter, which is dumb but it happens...

And that is why I answered how I did initially.

And because of my boyfriend's profession -- people judge him and hold him to a higher standard anyway, so he always felt like it would be even worse if he had his tattoos visible.

But to me? I don't really think one way or another PERSONALLY -- and I'm also kind of "used to" tattoos and almost look at them in a "nicer" light now because I associate them with him and I love him -- KWIM??

Finger Tattoos?

I hire people in the healthcare field ( I have two small tattoos that cannot be seen unless I show them so I'm not a total prude) but for clinical positions I prefer not to have people with visible tattoos because patients make negative comments about it. Just recently I hired someone for an administrative position with tattoos on each wrist and she has really long crazy colored nails but she's very good at what she does and so many people have visible tattoos now it's really not an option to exclude them all.
My bbfs DH got her initial on his ringer finger as a wedding surprise, 5 years later it always looks like his finger is injured or dirty lol. We laugh about it all the time.

Nay, in general.

If I would not look "professional" I would not do it. In all honesty NY is an at will state.

Your employment is "at will". All they have to say is "Thanks its not working out".

My guess if you went out and dyed your hair neon orange it would not be the look a professional company would want. A small tattoo on your finger IS different...

...but YOU want to be taken seriously.

So Nay.

ETA: After reading the above responses:

I don't care if people have tattoos. I don't judge them, I don't care. It means nothing.

I think its redic that some people have those ear things that expand their holes.

Or that a girl might have 10 ear piercings.

Nose piercing skeeve me out to no end.

However, I say live and let live and to each his own. I dot like it but I would NEVER tell you how to live your life.

But those still have NO affect on the job they do, or how they do.

All it is about is appearance. And what your employer thinks is acceptable.

And frankly it might affect the way you are seen in a professional environment. Like it or not, it can.

Exactly,'people are talking about corporate setting but we are talking about a receptionist at a doctors office. I don't count a doctors office as a corporate setting either. When I'm at a doctors office I'm more concerned with the wait time then whether the people in the front office has a little tat on their finger.

To be honest I wouldn't even care if the doctor had a tattoo as long as they were good. Doctors are usually convered anyway.

I say yay, no big deal and if your concerned where a ring for interviews lol!
