like we all say it is a personal choice...

It certainly is but saying formula is pretty close to breastmilk is simply not true. Stating that fact is not knocking anyone's choice.

i agree with u 100% (that u r not knocking anyones decision) but just b/c some people feel it is the way to go - does not mean we all do. I dont want people judging me for my personal choice not to. And that was why i said IMO i think it is just as good - and my dr has not told me otherwise

ETA - and i give A LOT of credit to those that can do it and are doing itChat Icon

I tried to BF Christopher and he wouldn't latch on, so I'm going to try again this time around. Most likely not exclusively though. Even if she latches, a combination of both.

I'm not BFing either. everyone has such different opinions on it - especially strangers!! IMO i think formula has come a long way and it has to be pretty close to breast feeding. its definately a personal choice.

Same here. I gave formula to my 1st born and he is a very healthy 22 month old. He has been sick once so far ( knowck on wood).

I am leaning towards not BFing also. I am still going to take the class and will try in the hospital and see how comfortable I am with it.

If I do BF, then I would also like to supplement with formula.

I could have written this word for word..

I'm leaning towards not BFing, because I just have never been compelled to do so (personal reasons as we all like to say Chat Icon)

But I'm not ruling it out 100%, and I might just see how I feel after I give birth and perhaps try..

Bottom line for ME is that I refuse to consider myself any sort of 'failure' if BFing isn't for us

I gave bf'ing a try and did not like it. Simple as that. I know if i stuck with it it could have worked but it was NOT the choice for me.

I hate when I hear i'm not giving my baby the "best" choice there is. And yes, a lactation nurse said that to me. Way to make a new mom who cares about her baby more than anything feel like a failiure.

I was formula fed as well as my 5 siblings. We have no allergies/health problems/intelligence problems etc... and my cousiins who were all breast fed have every allergy under the sun. i am NOT saying that it means a damn thing...just means that to each there own. and breastmilk is not a guarantee that your child will be better off..I am very happy giving my son formula..he is doing so well and i am happy with my choice.

I plan on bottle feeding. When I had Jack I tried breastfeeding despite knowing that deep down it just wasnt' something I wanted to do, but I decided to try and see what I thought. To be brutally honest, I just have no interest in breastfeeding; for me it does not feel like a natural thing. Its just not who I am. And while yes, we can have the breast is best discussion and the "I was raised on formula and turned out fine" discussion for hours on end, it really is just a personal decision and for me is all about my comfort level. I did not enjoy one minute of breastfeeding.

And yes, I was formula fed, am intelligent, well adjusted and have a good job, make sound choices, and never had issues with getting sick all the time as a child or adult. Chat Icon

I'm not BFing either... Its our choice and although I believe it is healthy.. its just not for me..

That's how I feel. I really don't have much time to decide, though Chat Icon I think I want to try in the hospital. If it doesn't work, I'm not going to stress about it, I'll go right for the bottle.

You never really know what your truly going to do until after the baby is here. I had a gf buy a top of the line breastpump and was so turned off by the sensation of breatfeeding that she formula fed.

Re: Feeding plans for when baby is here? (breast, bottle, a combination?)

If my adopted son is under 9 months old than I am going to try to adoptive breastfeeding and force a milk supply. We will probably have to supplement since I don't think I can get my supply totally up to speed in such a short time. I only get 6-8 weeks of notice before going to Africa to get him.

BFing was very important to me when I had Molly and I struggled. But I ended up pumping full time for 1 year and that is something I feel was important for me.

Formula does not = bad choice. It is just a personal choice that we all have to make. It isn't close to BM, but it is also not bad or unhealthy for children. It is just another form of food for them.

I am bottle feeding my boys. For numerous personal reasons this was mine and DH's decision and I feel no guilt about it whatsoever. My reasons were there were two (however i doubt i would of even with one), I have to go back to work shortly and to me it just was not for me. I don't feel like like i give my children anything less then a woman who BF's her child. THis is what is best for me and my family.

An no one (Except one person) has said anything bad to me about it.

EXACTLY my feelings! Not only am I not 100% comfortable with the idea of BFing, I am also afraid to be a "failure."

ETS: I saw my friend go through that (not being able to BF) and it was heartbreaking for her and for me as her friend to see her go through it.

I'd like to try to breastfeed for the first 3 months and pumping/breastfeeding until 6 months. If I don't make my goal, then so be it. I don't have issues with formula-feeding at all. I'm pro-whatever makes mom and baby happy.

I'm sorry but formula is no where close to breastmilk.

the benefits of breast milk surpasses formula milk.

BF children are more resistant to disease and infection early in life than formula-fed children. Children who are BF are less likely to contract a number of diseases later in life, including juvenile diabetes, multiple sclerosis, heart disease, and cancer before the age of 15.

Mothers who BF are less likely to develop osteoporosis later in life, are able to lose weight gained during pregnancy more easily and have a lower risk of breast, uterine and ovarian cancer.

Formula milk may be able to duplicate a few of what BM consists of, but formula cannot duplicate constantly changing array of essential nutrients in BM.

with all that said, in the end it's all up to the mother. it is a personal choice. and i do understand taht. just as i have decided to attempt to BF. just make sure you do your research by speaking to your doctor or online research to sum up your own conclusion.

I want to BF for at least 6 months but after the first month I want to switch on and off, pump/bottle and BF. DH wants to feed the baby he has allready told me so I will pump so he can too.

I did not BF and never planned on it. I personally do not feel comfy with it and I wasn't really convinced of the research on it benefits. After having the baby I thought I would regret it or think otherwise but actually it was the opposite I felt more strongly that I made the right decision not to BF. If I have another child I will definitely bottle feed again.

I just wanted to add to the girls who were told that the hospital is not supportive of those that don't BF. My hospital definitely gave plenty of info and help if you plan to BF but never once questioned my decision on how to feed my child. They were 100% supportive of my right to chose.

I believe to each their own and make the decision that works best for you and your familiy.

same here.. i don't plan on BFing all the way. my baby's gonna have to get some of their breastmilk in a bottle. i don't want my my babe to be too attached to my knockers all day long.

nicely put! i'm glad your hospital didn't condemn you. as told by other mothers that it's very hard and stressful to have a person give you a dirty look just because there's a personal disagreement. it's all up to you!

I definately plan on breast-feeding. I have to admit, the thought of actually doing it seems awkward and strange and I've heard it's hard work, but the thought of buying a pre-mixed concoction called "formula" to feed to my baby, frankly creeps me out. I read the ingredients on a can the other day and it just seemed like such an unnatural thing. I plan on breast-feeding and pumping when I return to work. That being said, I think everyone should make their own informed decision. You have to do what's right for you and your baby.

I am going to try to exclsuively breast feed until I have to go back to work (after 8 weeks). Then I may pump and try to intriduce formula. We'll see how it goes Chat Icon
