'Too Fat' Family Wants Bigger Checks
March 20) -- A British couple who say they can't work because of obesity-related health problems complained that the government checks they receive aren't enough to cover their living expenses. They aired their gripes in a story in the Telegraph.
Philip Chawner, 53, and his wife, Audrey, 57, haven't worked in 11 years. The government benefits they collect each year is equivalent to about $43,260 in American currency.
"What we get barely covers the bills and puts food on the table. It's not our fault we can't work. We deserve more," Philip Chawner told the newspaper.
The couple have two daughters -- Emma, 19, and Samantha, 21. The combined weight of the four is 1,160 pounds.
Each family member consumes 3,000 calories a day, about 500 over the recommended maximum for men and 1,000 over the limit for women, the Telegraph says.
Audrey Chawner admitted the family's diet isn't the best. But healthy food is "too expensive," she said.

And I agree w/the above poster that the government is supporting their weight problem

Ugh this is why even though I am overweight I at least try. I can't stand people who don't try, go for a walk if you home not working, drop the weight have some sense of self respect.

1st thing that came to my mind too! 
I don't get why they can't work?
If they can make it to the grocery store to get the food, why couln't they work there? Or be an operator of some sort? It doesnt require alot of physical activity to answer a phone...

I believe that this is either a story that the media has twisted or that the family is looking for some sort of endorsement from a company like Jenny Craig. As soon as I saw this topic I said that there must be other health problems, physical or psychological. I'm sure that the government in the UK will consider each of their disability claims separately. There won't be one file labeled "fat family." The article says that one of the family members has asthma and epilepsy, both related to obesity. I realize that weight loss is a great treatment for asthma but obesity is not the only cause of asthma. As for epilepsy, perhaps weight loss would help the medications to work better but I don't think that obesity is to blame for the disease. Maybe this family is out for all they can get from the system. I am not sure. What I do know is that stories like this make it appear that disability fraud is more common than it really is. In May it will be 15 years since I started my career as a disability lawyer. From day one people started to show me articles like this. The articles don't reflect the majority of cases in the system. I'm just trying to give another angle for thinking about this, as I do not know what is really happening with this particular family. None of us has their medical records.

their combined weight- equally divided is 290 a person.. its not like they are completely incapacitated from working...
there are telemarketer jobs and stuff where you sit all day...

Same here. I am alittle overweight but I make it a point to try and walk and eat healthy. To me these people sound lazy and don't want to work so they are blaming thier weight. I also agree that if they can get out of bed, get dressed then they are capable of working. There are alot of sit down jobs a person with medical issues can do. Just plain lazy IMHO.

They need that woman from "You Are What You Eat" (I forget her name) to go to their house. She's rip all of them a new one and get them "sorted out" as she puts it. But I don't see how they can't work.
