Family vacation to Maine - is Bar Harbor worth the extra 3+ hr drive?

After going back and forth about where to go, we decided to go to Maine this July. DS will be 16m old.

Can you recommend your favorite family friendly resorts in Maine?

Can you recommend things to do with a toddler?

Some places we are looking into are Sebasco, Samoset and Bar Harbor Regency. The websites of these resorts look beautiful but would love some first hand feedback.

Update: We just booked a flight to Portland. I will fly up but drive down with DH.

Is Bar Harbor worth the extra 3 hour drive?

We'd have to drive 3+ hours to Bar Harbor and then it would add 3 hours on our drive down to NYC.

How is Portland? Is it worth booking a night there?

We go to Ogunquit every summerChat Icon It is a great family town!! We stay at the Meadowmere Resort because it is close to all, has an indoor and outdoor pool, spa, and along the trolley route.

We went to Bar Harbor and we didn't like it and I really didn't think it was a family type town. It had an older feel. IMO.

The Meadowmere Resort looks wonderful. I think you may have posted this resort a while back. I think I may have liked it back then as well.

Do you usually stay at the resort or are there other activities? Can you recommend toddler friendly places to go?

DH used to go to bar harbor as a child. He keeps mentioning it. We may break up our vacation into 2 - we may stay a few nights in southern maine and like 1-2 nights at Bar Harbor.

We also go to Ogunquit. We stay at The Beachmere Inn. It's RIGHT on the water and absolutely beautiful. We've gone with DD when she was 1 and 2, and we're going again this summer and she'll be 3. We go to the beach (main activity!), go into town, visit neighboring towns, go the outlets (personal favorite Chat Icon), and other similar type activities.

DH and I went to Bar Harbor (pre-DD) for our 2nd anniversary, and absolutely LOVED it! We'll definitely bring DD back there someday, but what's keeping us away is the loooong ride (about 8 hours).

Where did you stay in Bar Harbor?

The website for Bar Harbor Regency look beautiful but tripadvisor reviews are pretty poor.

The reason we may split maine into two is the long drive.

We split our stay at a B&B and Harborside Hotel, Spa, & Marina. The location was GREAT and the pool was really nice. The rooms were very standard, though, for what I thought was going to be more of a luxurious kinda place.

Is the Harborside Hotel website misleading because the resort looks luxurious?

I originally thought I was settling for Maine but Maine looks like a great location for family a vacation. I'm very excited!

No matter where you choose to go in Maine, you can't go wrong! We have a summer place in Central Maine on a lake & we explore all the towns within a 2 hour radius. You will find TONS to do with a toddler

We split it up the time we did Bar Harbor and Ogunquit. We did it pre kids. The drive is really long.

I posted awhile ago about all the things to do there. I will try and find it and bump it for you.Chat Icon

Thank you so much for bumping!

I remeber you posting a while ago and made a mental note that one day we would go there. Looks like the time is now.

There are too many places to choose from! I think we may split time between Beechmere Inn and Harborside in Bar Harbor.

Re: Family vacation to Maine

I live near Bar Harbor in Maine and I can tell you the Bar Harbor Regency is GORGEOUS!! My DH and I stayed there for our first anniversary and loved it. We go to the 4th of July parade and fireworks every year in Bar Harbor and it's always a great time. That would be my recommendation.
Acadia National Park is also not to far away and it wonderful place to go with beautiful sights, if you go there, def go up to Cadillac, views are phenomenal there!

FM me if you want any more recommendations, i have lived here for most of my life!!

Which do you think is better - Harborside or Bar Harbor Regency?

Both look beautiful on the websites. I think Harborside is a little more expensive. I personally would prefer a resort with a very nice pool.

I would still recommend the Regency over the Harborside. The pool at the Regency overlooks the Bar Harbor marina and is beautiful to look at while you are at the pool and the rooms there are wonderful. If you are open to walk or jogging they have a wonderful jogging path that goes around the hotel that follows next to the marina, it's like jogging right next to the water, it's stroller friendly too.

Re: Family vacation to Maine

I love Bar Harbor. We've been there 3 times, all before DS was born. We've been there with family members who had a toddler. It's a really long drive, which is the only thing that really sucks about it.

We usually rent a house b/c we go with a bunch of people. If you like to hike, I'd get a hiking backpack to use with DS. You might be able to rent one up there, but I'm not sure.

We go to Maine every summer and we love it. In the last 2.5 years we have taken our DC there 4 times. In the Spring we stay in Ogunquit and in the Summer we usually rent a cabin in Wells. Wells is like 10 minutes from Ogunquit. We also visit York when we are there and that is also about 10 minutes from Ogunquit. All 3 towns have beautiful beaches. York has a Zoo and an amusement park. All 3 towns are very family friendly. We are going this summer and I can't wait. Chat Icon

Ogunquit seems to be a family favorite on these boards.

Gosh, it's 5 hours to drive to Ogunquit and then another 4 hours to drive from Ogunquit to Bar Harbor! It's a long drive but DH seems to really like Bar Harbor.

What is the name of the amusement park?

Here is a link to the zoo and amusement park in York: http://www.yorkzoo.com/. There is also a really nice light house in York and there is a cute restaurant there that is on the water. Here is a link to it: http://www.lighthouse.cc/capeneddick/

It is definitely a long drive to Bar Harbor. The first time my DH and I ever went to Maine, before my DC were born we drove up to Bar harbor, visited the national park, and then took a ferry over to Canada. On the way home form bar Harbor we stopped in Ogunquit and fell in love with it and its neighboring towns.

Re: Family vacation to Maine - is Bar Harbor worth the extra 3+ hour drive?

We just booked a flight to Portland. DH will be up in Maine for a course and DS and I are going to fly and meet him up there.

Is Bar Harbor worth the extra 3 hour drive?

We'd have to drive 3+ hours to Bar Harbor and then it would add 3 hours on our drive down to NYC.

How is Portland? Is it worth booking a night there?

Not sure if we should just spend our time in southern Maine or whether we should add that extra travel time to get to Bar Harbor.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

There is so much to do in Southern Maine, I would just stay there.

We love Portland. It is beautiful!!!!

We took DS to the Train Museum there and the Train Ride and he loved it.

I would def go back there. It is so clean (as is most of Maine) and everyone is really friendly.

Love your family pictures!

Are those pictures of the little train from the train museum?

I also read about the Children's Museum of Maine. Have you been there?

I guess we will do 1 night in Portland.

Bar Harbor is sooo worth it! We went camping there as kids and it stands out in my mind as the best vacation we went on. I can't give you any ideas of what to do.. I was a kid. But it was amazing. Portland is really nice too. I went there as an adult.

DH also used to go there as a kid and has very fond memories of it. At the same time, DH thinks it may not be worth the drive with a toddler.
