don't get me wrong...I don't dislike totally everything about LI, it's just not where *I* am from or the culture I grew up in and I don't understand the need to put them together just b/c there is no NATURAL border between counties and areas.

I was like this until I married someone from LI. Even though I live on LI now...I still consider myself a Queens girl!!

I agree. And Brooklyn and Queens are part of the 5 Bouroughs which L.I isn't a part of Chat Icon So I never considered them part of L.I. Chat Icon

I think it goes like this. Staten Island, Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn are all the younger siblings of Manhattan. Nassau and Suffolk would be the youngest kids and Brooklyn and Queens want them to know that they "aren't as cool" so they don't associate with them. In reality, Long Island is better because there aren't any good golf courses in Brooklyn or Queens. The only good thing they have is the Mets, and as big of a Mets fan as I am, even I realize they suck.

actually dude, Brooklyn was recently voted coolest city in the world or something by GQ magazine...so we are no longer under the shadow of Mannyhattan, tywm! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

and yeah Magellan could not convince me that I am from Long Island.

More importantly, I think Dyker Beach Golf Course is beautiful. And everyone knows the Mets suck. But this is coming from a Bronx Bombers fan....or wait...are they the Westchester Bombers since last time I checked, the Bronx and Westchester County are connected? Chat Icon

Brooklyn.

And I DON'T consider it Long Island by any means. Different school system, different taxes, different PD etc etc.

I think what drives me nuts about saying Queens and Brooklyn are not part of LI is that LI is a geographical body...NOT A POLITICAL division in any way shape or form.

So to say the taxes are different etc is not correct because LI doesn't have taxes. Nassau and Suffolk do because they are counties. Nassau is different than Suffolk just like it is different than Brooklyn and queens.

When someone asks a question about long island would never think they mean anything other than Nassau and Suffolk.

no, b/c brooklyn and queens are in fact linked together both fiscally and politically are a part of another entity entirely, and Nassau and Suffolk stand on their own.

Please understand that by answering the question the way I did, from my world view and perspective as a resident OF NYC part of which is ON Long Island, it was not an indication of my knowlege or understanding (or lack thereof) of the geographic nature of this rock formation sitting on top of the Atlantic Ocean.

I don't think anyone is arguing the fact that they are all located on the same land mass. I think most people know when people refer to LI, they are referring to Nassau and Suffolk. Even the OP made it clear that is what she meant. It wasn't until people started questioning the Queens and Brooklyn responses that people had to explain why they answered the way they did.

This is like when people correct people for not saying "American" when asked about their nationality. Yes, those of us that were born in the USA KNOW that we are in fact American however we also know that 99.9% of the time, the person asking the question is actually referring to our background/heritage (in otherwords where our families came from). If I asked someone about their nationality and they answered American, I'd smack them. You know what I mean!! Chat Icon

LOL...as soon as I saw this thread a few days ago, I knew it wouldn't take long for this debate to come up.

Yes, geographically, Queens and Brooklyn are on Long Island.

However, everyone knows that when you talk about "living on Long Island" you are talking about Nassau and Suffolk counties. No one who lives in Queens or Brooklyn says that they live on Long Island.

I think people just like to argue the point to hear themselves talk. Chat Icon

ETA: I lived in Forest Hills after I got married. I did not move to Long Island until we bought our house in Nassau County 4 years later! My husband, who grew up in Wantagh, definitely didn't think he was still living on LI when we were in Queens.

Well smack me then because that is how I answer that question. My daughter is 5th generation American. I want to smack the people that swear up and down they are Italian because their last name ends in a vowel yet they don't know the first thing about their heritage except that they 'talk with their hands and eat a lot.' And for the record, I can pick on Italians because my last name is a Mc.

I love you.. and I don't say Brooklyn or Queens are "Long Island" because I know it bugs the mess out of people from those boroughs. What it boils down to is that geographic truth or not - people are very protective of their right to be considered 'city folk'. It's about self identification and there is NOTHING wrong with that in my book.

Re: EDITED: For those who don't live in Nassau or Suffolk Counties !

Wherever you are from I respect people who have pride in their hometwon. Queens and Brooklyn folk don't want to say LI bc they are proud of their borough/county (and also we think we are somewhat/somehow cooler than those born and bred in Nassau and Suffolk Chat Icon).

And also culturally there are differences. Some friends I know from Nassau and Suffolk for example did not use mass transit until they were adults where we were taking the city bus to school. I did not get my driving liscense until I was 21 yrs old Chat Icon that ish is UNHEARD of in good ol LI!
