DS is sick for the first time...part 3...the hospital

So after I talked to the Pediatrician, we decided he needed to be seen so they told me to head right over. We tried to give him Pedialyte, but he threw it up almost immediately. We only gave him 2 oz, and his normal bottle is 7 oz. We went right over to the ER, which was packed. When we got there he was only in the beginning stages of dehydrated, but after the 4 hour farghing wait he was full-on, passed out, lethargic and almost completely unresponsive. It was very frightening. DH at one point actually thought that he was going to die & had a breakdown in the ER. They waited for his blood work before hydrating him (I gave them hell about this one) and by the time they gave him the fluids he had to be admitted. He had lost almost a pound in one day. Once we were in the room, they were on top of it. They monitored him very closely, and checked his vitals and his output every hour. My ped came in yesterday and today, and made frequent phone calls to the Attending to track his progress. He took a 250 mL bag of Saline, then a 500 mL bag of Saline & Dextrose, then a 2000 mL bag of Saline, Dextrose and Potassium, but he was still spitting up with every attempt to feed him. Finally early yesterday he was able to keep the Pedialyte and water down, and then this morning he was able to tolerate formula again. He is still coughing, but he now knows how to expel the phlegm, so the choking issue is gone (thank goodness), and he gained back a pound and a half! He slept through the night last night & only woke up from his nap today to be discharged. He is finally back to his normal self & was waving "bye" & blowing kisses to the nurses as we were leaving.

So now that I am home with my munchkin & he is safe, I wrote a note...

Dear Mom of the snot twins:

Thanks to your incredible parenting skills and wonderful judgment, we have just returned from the hospital, where my child was on IV fluids and nourishment for the last 40 hours. He was nearly unconscious...a sight I would not wish on anyone...

So here's a reminder; Your decisions affect others, and those decisions have repercussions. Thanks for giving my son his first trip to the hospital.

Did you go to Good Sam? We had to wait sooo long in the ER too to be seen and it was distressing but once we were in there, they were beyond great with him.


I remember how scary it was.

Im so so so so glad baby G is doing ok today and so much better and Im sorry you all had to go through that!

I posted it on Relationship but took it down. A woman went to a party the other day for DHs cousin with her 2 kids that were both INCREDIBLY sick. DS caught their illness. They all thought I was overreacting when I sat myself in an unoccupied room with DS until DH said good-bye to everyone.....

Glad you "overreacted" (which you didn't) - imagine if you'd allowed DS to PLAY with them and have close contact???

So sorry you went through all that! Shame on that relative for bringing the twins out sick!

Oh I know...how idiotic! They all at me, but I was just the one in the hospital all weekend with ds.....

Meanwhile, they were playing with the snot twins & then trying to play with DS..no hand washing, nothing....W T F are people thinking....
