Dr. says I am overfeeding DS - please help. LONG

DS is 10 weeks old. He was 8lbs and 21 inches at birth. By one month, he was 23 inches and 10lbs 10oz.

This week I took him to the dr. He is 24 1/2in and 13lbs 14oz. He gained 3lbs. The dr. says that is too much to gain in 1 month. He says babies should gain between 1lb and 1 1/2lbs a month. I had been feeding DS 5oz every 3 hrs. He wants me to feed him 4 1/2 oz every 4 hrs. He says this will help with his gas, spitting up...

Basically, it is a nightmare. I feel like I am torturing this baby. He is a big baby and he is hungry. I can't always get him to wait 4 hrs. He's really hungry at 3 hrs.

DS is big for his age but he does not look overweight (I can't even believe I am concerned about an overweight infant). I feel like I am already cutting back on the quantity I give him, so maybe I can feed him before the 4th hour. Do you think it is really bad if I feed him every 3 hrs?

He is such a happy baby and he is just miserable when he is hungry. Has anyoe ever experienced something like this? Any advice or hugs would be appreciated. I want to do what is right for him.

I always thought the saying was that you can't overfeed a baby? I would be very uncomfortable/upset denying him food too!!

I agree, I think your doctor is using a broad, overgeneralization of what a baby should or shouldn't do. I would feed him if he was hungry.

I was BFing at that age so I'm not sure how much my DS was eating, but is it possible that you're mistaking his tiredness cues for hunger? How much is he sleeping?

Cutting down food like that would make me really uncomfortable! DD screams when she is hungry- and I can't even imagine if she was hungry before the 4 hours was up! It would be torturous!

I would get a second opinion!

Hugs to you- I'm sure it cant be easy! Chat Icon

I agree...they don't need much to meet their needs, but food is one of their needs. I wouldn't try to cut it down, personally...go with your gut, you're his mom and know him best!

That is weird that he said you are overfeeding. My DS was 8 1 at birth, at 1 month he was over 10 pounds at 2 months he was 13 and a 1/2 and at 3 months he is 16..I EBF but daycare he gets bottles of about 4 1/2 ounces. If he is hungry I would feed him!! Thats just my opinion.

You are right, sometimes his tired cues mimick his hunger cues. Maybe in the beginning I was making this mistake, but I have been trying EVERYTHING to get him to 4 hours.

Maybe I've just gotten him into a bad feeding cycle?

I am not a doctor but my advice would be to give him 4.5 oz every 3 hours. Slowly see if you can stretch it to 3.5 hours. If not then I would try 4oz every 3 hours (whch honestly sounds very normal to me).

I don't know...My ped always said that babies only eat when they are hungry and will refuse the bottle when they are not hungry. It's not like adults where when we are full but see dessert we "make room" for it. Babies don't do that. So I'm not sure I understand where your ped is coming from but please don't feel bad about this. You are doing a great job and your munchkin is very healthy - and happy!Chat Icon

Girls, you are making me feel so much better about this! I really want to do what is best, but I just really feel that the Dr. is being too restrictive this time...

THANK YOU for your responses!!!! Chat Icon

Ditto! If the baby is hungry, feed him. He'll slim down once he starts moving around (crawling and walking).

I was doing the same thing - although my ped didn't have any problem with the weight gain. It was only after reading the Baby Whisperer that I realized I was misreading those cries. Once he was on the right nap schedule, things were much easier.

Re: Dr. says I am overfeeding DS - please help. LONG

one thing you can try if he wakes up in the middle of the night for a feeding is maybe give him some tea like chamomile or fennel, sometimes that might be just enough to ease him back to sleep (thats what I do sometimes)...

I'm so sorry, that must be hard. Have you told the ped. that this is impossible? That your poor DS is starving? I would do what is right for you, cutting back slightly but definitely feed when he is crying. I hope it gets better Chat Icon

I TOTALLY agree

The first few months of my DS's life, he was gaining over 2 pounds a month.. he was born 7 lbs 4 oz and by 3 months he was 15 pounds.. and he's nothing but healthy, and always has been..

When babies start moving around, the weight gain drastically slows down. Now over the last 3 months my son has gained 2 pounds. He's one now, and he's perfectly on target.. well proportioned and tall (he's a BIG boy but not overweight at ALL)

I would NEVER withhold food from a baby if they were crying for it... I think it's very cruel, actually Chat Icon

Re: Dr. says I am overfeeding DS - please help. LONG

?My doctor told me to worry about underfeeding, not overfeeding. My DS was 8lbs.5oz. & 19.5 inches at birth & I was told she should gain 1oz a day from then until the 2 month check-up. At
2 months she was 12lbs 7oz & 23inches. When my doctor measured her first & saw the 23" he said “she should be about 13lbs - lets put her on the scale & see”. He was close. He said this because “ususally, 23" = 13lbs. My DS has been eating every 3 hours since birth - sometimes more sometimes less. She is now 5 months old & takes 7 oz every 3 hours plus cereal & fruit 1x
a day & cereal & veggie 1x a day. She is now about 17lbs & 26". My doc says she is just right.

I absolutely agree! I would change the DR before I would starve my child. Obviously your son wants the food.

Re: Dr. says I am overfeeding DS - please help. LONG

I don't believe in over feeding a baby.

And, I think that sounds about right! Steven gained 3 lbs the first 4 weeks then 3 lbs the next 4 weeks. Only at about 6 months did he slow down to 1-1.5 lbs a month.
