Does anyone sew?

I know this may sound a little nuts, but I want to start making clothes for my pups. I never like what I see in the stores, and the stuff online is sooo pricey sometimes.

The problem is I do not know how to sew, nor do I own a sewing machine. For those of you that sew, what is a good starter machine for all types of fabrics?

Thanks!Chat Icon

Re: Does anyone sew?

I do - bt just a little...I learned from my mom who is an expert sewer...

my mom always had singer (until she upgraded to huskvarna)...which I think has basic models...

for patterns...simplicity is really that...simple!! you can look at the level for other patterns to...

ifyou go to a fabric store, like fabric bonanza or jo-anns, look for pattern books...and just flip through them to get an idea...there are pet sections...

patterns will tell you how much fabric you need...and the employees at the store are HUGE helps!!!

good luck!!

I bought my Singer machine from Wal Mart. The lady saw that I didn't know what I was doing, so she suggested the extra simple machine. She said you never use the fancy features anyway, so why confuse yourself with them. She also said I could use the machine for 90 days, and if I keep the box and the receipt I could return it if I didn't like sewing. I kept it and my friend borrows it and learned to sew also. It cost about $129, I think.

FYI, if you are looking for fabric, I used to go to an upholsterer shop and they would give me their scraps. I would get huge bags of gorgeous heavy duty fabric and make bags and stuff.

This is an excellent suggestion. A lot of those fabrics would be amazing for totes. It would be so simple to stitch and to make a long shoulder strap. Now to find an upholsterer. Chat Icon

I bought a few books on Amazon with patterns for dog clothes. I have a TINY Chiwawa...so nothing ever fit her...and some stuff was really $$$$$

I also started on a Singer. Most of the machines today can do all sorts of neat stuff...like different types of stiches and stuff...

Good Luck!
