I don't buy any dairy that is not organic.
I don't buy Perdue chicken because it's disgusting! I don't buy regular beef in supermarkets, only organic or at least grass fed or kosher in specialty stores.
Other than that-no!

I also won't shop at Wal-mart unless I've exhausted other options. I believe they're the root of all evil.
same here!
me too!
another ditto here! I've never even been to the store , but I'm just curious , what do you mean?
The way that they treat their employees is terrible. They are very anti-union and employees are taken advantage of. They actively seek to put mom and pop stores out of business. Everything is so 'cheap' because it's made in sweatshops oversees and there are documented cases of child labor. When they 'contribute' to charity, most is employee contributions, not theirs.

Spending money at Target hasn't been sitting well with me either lately. It has been awhile since I have been inside one...I have zero interest in helping support anti gay Tom Emmer, Republican nut who Target donates to.

Re: Does anyone avoid buying certain brands...
I stay away from all mainstream dog food, ever since reading an article that said, among other things, this:
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Cow brains. Sheep guts. Chicken heads. Road kill. Rancid grain. These are a few of the so-called nutritionally balanced ingredients found in the commercial pet food served to companion animals every day.
Condemned parts and animals rejected for human consumption are routinely rerouted for commercial pet foods. A similar fate applies to so-called 4-D animals. These are food animals picked up dead, or that are dying, diseased, or disabled, and do not meet human-food qualifications. They are processed straightaway for companion animal consumption. Little goes to waste.
Another source of meat that isn't mentioned on pet food labels is pet byproducts, the bodies of dogs and cats. In 1990 the San Francisco Chronicle reported that euthanized companion animals were found in pet foods.
Pet food scientists have discovered that spraying the kibble or pellets with a combination of refined animal fat, lard, kitchen grease, and other oils too rancid or deemed inedible for humans makes an otherwise bland or distasteful product palatable.
http://www.preciouspets.org/truth.htm
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Whether you believe it or not, all you have to do is look at that ingredient list. If there are grains, "gluten" or "meal" in the first three ingredients of your pet's food, the food is most likely cr@p. Any company that sells this kind of cr@p (and remember, that Nestle owns Purina) is not to be trusted in my eyes. Dogs loving the food is no way to gauge; they eat poop. What do they know?
We shopped around for a better quality food and have settled on Evo. It's more expensive because it's worth it, and I'd rather spend money on food now to keep my loved animals healthy than feed them cr@p food and spend money on healthcare down the road.

I don't buy dog food that that has corn, grains, etc.
I don't buy Newsday. They are anti-police. Years ago they wrote an article and published a picture of cops that were getting 3/4 pension and milking it, one of the individuals was of my father's best friend. They were totally wrong about him, he sued Newsday and got a settlement and they published a tiny tiny retraction about him after he was on Page 2.
I try to buy organic, anti-biotic food. But I am a snob about certain things - Heinz Ketchup, Hellman's mayo.

We also try to purchase organic food when possible. The must have organic items for us are eggs, peanut butter & yogurt. We also only purchase eggs from free range chickens & when DH cooks he only cooks free range chicken. If we are a party or someones home, we do not have a problem eating regular chicken but you can taste the difference.

I don't buy Nestle products either, but for different reasons. My mother stopped buying Nestle products in 1978 when the Nestle Boycott began (it is an international movement); Nestle went to impoverished areas/countries and had people dress as nurses and pass out formula to new mothers. The free samples often lasted long enough for the mother's milk to dry up.
These were poor people who could not afford the formula or sanitized water, many did not have the means or knowledge to do proper sanitation of bottles or water before mixing the formula. Many babies died from disease in the water and many others died from malnutrition because they mother would "stretch" the formula.
The WHO organization created a Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes in 1981 which Nestle claims to follow however they are continuously being called out for marketing that is not in line with the WHO code.
Seriously...who DOES this? Is business that necessary to have people DIE?
I personally hate Walmart and go out of my way not to shop there if I can avoid it. Their practices in middle America make me sick. (they go out of their way to put mom and pop stores out of business so they are the only game in town, they also make workers work 34 hours a week, which is just enough to NOT pay them health benefits).
I also saw an AWFUL Capri Sun post on FB...
I thought the law was that you had to pay insurance to someone who works over 1000 hours a year? And 34 hours a week is 1768 hours a year.... so wouldn't they have to pay insurance? I'm not starting drama with you... I'm really just curious. I know there is some federal law, is it ERISA? about this. I know at my company (which is a large corporation) they used to tally up the hours come September to see if people are close to the 1000 hour limit and should receive benefits.
I've heard a lot of terrible things about Walmart... so I'm not sticking up for them at all.
I'm SHOCKED at all this stuff about Nestle... I never knew this!!!

SO and i have been working all summer to impove the food that comes into our home. these posts have definitely shed some light on some things for me.
i do not shop at walmart, besides treating their employees badly, i HATE their customer service. i went not too long ago because something was dirt cheap, ended up walking out without making a purchase because of that horrid service.

I wish we could avoid some stores and brands, but honestly, if that's all you can afford to buy or shop... As much as I know that Organic products are better for you, we could never afford to buy them all the time.

WOW!! You have inspired me to start looking at my cat's food better....
There was a thread in Pets about a website that rates foods based on ingredient lists, I'll have to find it for you.
See, I don't believe everything I read about this but the point is that there's no way to prove it without a full investigation. The food is not regulated, I don't know why considering it's a multi million dollar business.
So I go by the big recalls years back (and currently) for Melamine, Salmonella and other things that should never appear in pet food. They killed pets all over the country. I believe the FDA.
Here is the FDA's list with all the manufacturers affected. My old pet food (Natural Balance) is on the list. My new one is not. Since the FDA historically only cared about human-grade food for humans, and pet food can contain a lot of things not fit for our consumption, we only feed human-grade dog food now.

Re: Does anyone avoid buying certain brands...
I try to stay away from the evil empire= Walmart.
Their business practices of running out the little guy is bad enough.
Not paying their workers well, treatikng women well and all the other crap is bad enough.
But their business practices are sickening.
Do you all know that Walmart (basically and allegedly) bullies companies into doing what it wants? If they dont, wal mart wont sell their product. Its just wrong how they bully (and worse) companies.
Evil empire is out for me.
I also stayed away from Circuit City after they laid off all those people (me insluded). I laughed the day they closed.

My company is a victim of this practice which is why, along with their general business practice, I refuse to shop there all together. I don't think I have been in a WalMart since 1995.
Well, I stopped shopping there when I learned of their business practices but personal experience sealed the deal a while back.
