Do you know someone who is addicted to drugs (Opioids, etc..., not marijuana)?

What part of the Island are they in?

I realize it's a sensitive topic, so I added a poll to respond anon.

I know people in both counties. So I did not vote

My brother died 6 years ago from a heroin overdose.

I can tell you that heroin/opioids is all over long island in every town. People may not want to believe that but they are. Rich and the poor are addicted to it.

We are def. In an epidemic and hopefully they get a control on it. Its nice to see the past few months bust are happening.

I'm so sorry about your brother. My heart goes out to you.

I didn't realize it was such an epidemic here. Maybe I didn't want to believe it, and creating this poll might prove it wrong.

I feel so helpless because I know the hold it takes on people - my loved ones included - and to this day, I don't know that there is anything I can do. They just need to want to get help, right? I don't know.

And you are right about Rich & Poor. I was surprised to hear about parents of young children being addicted. It surprised me because - our kids! How can anyone choose anything over our kids? It takes a strong hold.

Sadly, yes. A friend of a friend just lost their son last year to a heroin overdose. Another friend has a daughter who has been in and out of rehab at least 5 times and is currently back to using.

It's just awful and heartbreaking.

I'm in Queens so did not vote but it is everywhere.

We recently had a guest speaker at our Civic meeting who gave a lot of statistics about overdoses in our neighborhood and it's staggering. She is working on getting free Naloxone kits out to the community so in case people's loved ones do overdose they have access to the reversal drug.

eta: my neighbor on my floor died last year from an opioid overdose. He was "the picture of health", worked out etc...

I know someone who is a former heroin addict (Nassau County) - and yes, he truly is no longer an active addict. Hasn't used in at least 5 years and is now married with family. (But, I do worry that he could go back to it at any time)

my brother has had a drug problem for a good protion of his life and when he died he left behind 2 kids.

But people who may have not always been a drug addict are still becoming addicts and there really isn't anything you can do. They need to want to stop and forcing them some how to rehab may help but if they don't want to stay committed to it they will go right back.

Its a hard drug to stop.

You are not the only one that may not realize the epidemic but it is and it has been going on for years and it just keeps getting worse cause everyone wants to pretend its not happening.

I'm not asking this to be snarky. But are you new to New York or LI?

Because it's been an epidemic for years. So I'm surprised you didn't realize it.
Again, I'm not being snarky. I'm just surprised to hear that.
I feel it's always being talked about.

Edited to answer the question.

Sadly I know a few people addicted to drugs.

I know someone who has been cleaned for over 15 yeas but yes he could go back anytime. Its a powerful addiction and he worked (s) very hard to stay off it.

so many people don't realize or just think its in one area but its everywhere not even just NY/LI its all over the country.

Some people I feel like live in their own little bubble of their life and not realize whats going on all around.

But to be fair I feel like its only now really being talked about a lot more than it has in the past

No, just busy having kids & working I suppose. I don't mean to sound naive, I knew it was a problem, but an epidemic, no. Didn't realize.

Thanks for helping open up the dialogue with other Long Islander's.

I remember it really being brought out in the open with that pharmacy shooting in Medford that happened about 6 yrs ago.
If I remember correctly a lot of pharmacies were being robbed around the same time.

I knew about the problem before. But that's when it really opened my eyes to HOW bad it was.

I feel that really didn't help either and I think people just thought it was more pain killers and then of course once the story was "old" people probably just thought it was done with.

I feel like we didn't hear much in regards to heroin though its been around forever. There was lots that used in my high school when I went and I graduated over 15 years ago!! But no one talked about it. They wanted to keep quite so its doesn't ruin town reputation but now no town is "safe" from it and more and more stories are coming out now so more I guess are finally realizing how bad it really is

I'm so scared for our kids. And not just my own, but all our kids.

What can we do?

My sister had a drug problem in general but stopped. Did not live in NY and it was a LONG time ago.

Although we don't want out kids smoking pot you can't get addicted to it or die from it. You can be addicted to the way it makes you feel, but you can't get physically addicted.

I had a foot surgery and the doctor sent me home with 30 Percocet. I needed 3 days worth...so I needed...12 at most?

I also had some pain after a DNC and the doc sent me home with 30 when I needed 4 at the ABSOLUTE most.

I was very careful and know that I won't get addicted (for many reasons). But people who don't understand these drugs and are given handfuls of them at a time.....I just don't get it.

and then there are people who NEED the medication to manage pain so is it fair to regulate them because others abuse it?

Re: Do you know someone who is addicted to drugs (Opioids, etc..., not marijuana)?

Unfortunately heroin has made a big comeback.

I lost 2 cousins to OD. One before I was born and one when I was a kid. I had another cousin who was addicted for most of my life and finally got clean.

Heroin has been a problem for longer then I'm alive. It's easier to get now, so the victims of this drugs are getting younger and younger Chat Icon

I currently know 2 addicts who were clean for 7+ years and fell off the wagon. It's a forever battle. One slip, one day "off" and it all comes crashing down.

Horrible.

Yes, this is a huge problem. We need to hold these drug companies and doctors who are irresponsible more accountable.

I live in Suffolk so I voted "Yes, in Suffolk" but I know multiple addicts in both counties.

I used to live out of state (in FL and PA). I have friends that still live in both states and they've posted on FB about the epidemic with heroin near them too. It seems like it's just everywhere now.

I didn't do the poll because the answers are going to be dependent on where people live but there are drugs everywhere. There is not one town that is not effected. Our school district just added a drug counselor to staff for next year to help out families/children in need, which I think every high school should be doing. There are multiple support groups and awareness groups on Long Island for families and also a bunch of programs for schools. We just had Steered Straight come to all 6th Grade Classes, Jr. High and High School.

I also agree with the other poster that doctors need to be more responsible for how much they are prescribing. My mother after many surgeries/cancer had at least 100 oxi pills in her house that she never used. I made her bring them to the pharmacy for disposal.

I always say, if you live on Long Island (even on the gold coast - probably worse on the gold coast!) that there is at least 1 addict living within 3 blocks of you.

Thinking otherwise is just putting your head in the sand.

Re: Do you know someone who is addicted to drugs (Opioids, etc..., not marijuana)?

There are numerous stories a week on News12 about people overdosing, heroin busts, arrests from parents shooting up or overdosing (while their kids were in the car), etc.. I went to News12 and did a quick count. There have been at least 13 heroin related stories from all over Long Island since the beginning of June (probably a ton more, I just did a super quick count).

I can't see how anyone doesn't notice, especially if you have kids. It terrifies me that one day my kid will be going to school with kids that do drugs and I have to teach him to say no. What if he doesn't listen to me? It's a scary world we live in.

At this point in our area its like 9/11: we all know someone or a friend of a friend that is a victim of heroin and/or opiods. It does not discriminate and thats part of the denial problem (no one wanting to talk about it)

Re: Do you know someone who is addicted to drugs (Opioids, etc..., not marijuana)?

I can count 7 people off the top of my head, that I went to high school with, who have passed away from overdoses.

My grandmother's sister was an addict many years ago. She did get clean but died at a young age do to health complications related to her drug use.

It's everywhere and it's very scary.
