But I drive a 10 yr old Jeep that we bought from DH's brother or else I'm sure I'd have a payment too

I have enough savings where I could probably pay off both cars so I wouldn't have payments.
But I like having a nice chunk of change in liquid savings for an emergency fund... just in case we fall on some bad times.
I think after these two cars are paid off... I am going to suggest to the wife that we only maintain one new car instead of two. (with her probably driving the new car to work - i'll drive a beater around during the week if need be).

DH paid off my car once we got married. We were looking at getting an Accord to replace one of DH's really old cars but the thought of a car payment and a new baby freaked me out. Its really nice not having one.

No...I paid off both cars using our HELOC. The interest on a HELOC is tax deductible, where it is not on a car loan. So...instead I make the payments to myself to pay back the HELOC.

I don't have a car, DH has payments on his still.
We are thinking of just paying it off, it would only be a small portion of the money we are saving for a down payment on a co-op.
