Do I have a shot at a 'normal' size baby for #2? (Share your experience)

Big kids run in our family. My mom had a 9 1/2 pounder, my sister had a 9 1/2 pounder, and I had an 11 1/2 pounder (born two weeks early).

My cousin just had a near 9 pounder, 4 WEEKS EARLY!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Did anybody have different sized children? This birth nearly killed me and I'm still feeling the after effects. Can anybody share their experience of big/normal babies? Even if it's your story, or your mom's, or a friend.

I wonder if I should close up shop. Chat Icon

ETA: None of us had GD.

I wouldn't close up shop if you really want more kids. I'm assumingyou had a c-section and I'm sure they'd keep an eye on the baby's size and schedule you for a c-section again.

I don't know I have heard of people having a smaller child if the next one was a different sex (girl was 2nd child - and smaller than the boy who was DC #1).

I know DD was 9 lbs 4 oz at 38 weeks. My OB told me when I asked about future children that he would definitely say #2 will be same size or bigger.

A neighbor of mine has 4 boys - all delivered vaginally - I think the first 2 were in the 9 lb range and the last 2 were in the 10 lb range - I think she had 4 in 4 years BTW.

Over 9 lb babies run in DH's side of the family. Our first was born 3 weeks early and he was 9 lbs 7 oz. Chat Icon With my second, she was much smaller, born at 38.5 weeks, a perfect 7 lbs 11 oz (and a VBAC I might add Chat Icon ). There is hope!

Honestly Im going to say that you will have another large baby...

My kids werent huge by any means but had they been born on time they would have been on the larger side...

Ariel was 4 weeks early and weighed 8lbs and Caden was close to 4 weeks early and weighed almost 8lbs...and the twins were 5 weeks early so they were tiny but had they been born on time they would have been close to 8lbs which would have been big for twins..

Ive had a couple of friends of mine who had large babies as well...and they were all large...one girlfriends babies were over 11lbs a piece and my friend and his brothers were all 11lbs and one brother was over 12lbs!!!!!

But I wouldnt let that stop me from having any more kids though...

Julia was 8lbs 5oz, and she was 2 weeks early, Todd Jr was 7lbs 9oz and born at 39 weeks, I thought he was going to be much bigger since they say your kids weight goes up with each pregnancy, my mom had big babies too, my brother Anthony was 11lbs at birth.

Since your first pregnancy was so bad and your son was so big, they may make you deliver earlier the next time around.....

DS#1 was 10lb 3ozs and DS#2 was 8lbs 12oz.... While 8lbs+ is sometimes considered big, there was such a visible difference in their size and the labor.

I only have one DC so i cant comment on myself....BUT my mom was overdue with all of us
older bro 10lbs and some change
me 7.12
my younger brother 11lbs and some change

from reading all youve gone through it must be a very difficult decision to make, but if you want another child I would say go for it because you never know! you could have a peanut next time!

You could have a smaller baby but a smaller baby for you might be a 10 pounder. You could also go the other way and have an even larger baby. Chat Icon Obviously there is no way of knowing for sure.

Re: Do I have a shot at a 'normal' size baby for #2? (Share your experience)

my mom had 4 and with each kid the size increased- my youngest brother was almost 10lbs. i've only had 2 and they were average size (Chat Icon 6.15 Chat Icon 7.8) im assuming this one will be a little bigger, but i have no idea. It sounds like your family tends to have bigger babies, but like other posters said, i wouldnt not have any more on the chance that it might be another big baby- will all the technology, they can track the develpment and size.

Ava was 9lb at 41 weeks. I had to have a c-section.

Brody was a repeat c-section at 38 weeks. He only weighd 7 lbs 10 oz.

If you have a repeat c-section, I'm sure they will monitor the size closely, and will deliver a few weeks early.

Everyone I know who had 2+ kids, the 2nd one was bigger but I also don't think that #3 or #4 where so much more after that.

Re: Do I have a shot at a 'normal' size baby for #2? (Share your experience)

#1 was 7 pounds 10 ozs and 21 inches. He was born ON his due date.

#2 was 8 pounds, 9 ounces and 21 inches long, and he was 2 weeks early.

#3 was 7 pounds 5 ounces and 20 inches long, and she was 10 days early.

I really do not buy into the "each child is bigger than the last" theory.

Here's the deal Kelly you didn't just have a big baby you had an exceptionally large (but gorgeous) baby. There was obviously some crazy phenomenon that caused this but they don't know why. If they found out what the cause was (ex. undiagonsed GD) then that would be something that can be controlled for the next pg but since they have no idea why you had such a large baby then you are susceptible to the same thing happening for #2 Chat Icon

Thanks for the b!tch slap back into reality Doreen. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Wouldn't that be something if it was undiagnosed GD? They tested me every week, then by week 35 they gave me a more detailed GD test, because they couldn't believe I didn't have it.

For my last test (which I didn't know was my last one) I went in there drinking a Slurpee. Chat Icon Maybe not the smartest idea. The girl drawing my blood said 'Kelly, I know you are sick of us, but this test is going to come back so high with all that in your system.' It came back borderline, not even high. Chat Icon

Hey in an ideal world we would all have 6lb babies. I know my vagina would appreciate that. Like you said you grow them big. What does your Dr say about this? As much as they'd like to believe it was undiagnosed GD with all that testing I doubt that was the problem.
