It's one of the incidentals of running a business to accept credit/debit cards. Business owners should factor it into their operating costs. If they don't want to accept cards, then I don't need to shop there.

Yes, and I don't typically shop at places like this since I never have cash on me. It's the price of doing business, and while credit/debit cards cost more to accept, they would get MORE business if they accepted them, so it would balance out.

What really gets me is the places that make you buy $10 worth of stuff to use your card. It's against visa/mc's TOS, and I usually walk away from those too.

i think its annoying because i don't usually carry cash on me. However, if i know its cash only before i got inside, then i would prepare myself and go to the ATM to have cash on me.
DH thinks its an amazing idea as a business owner because most of them don't claim how much they really make.

Start up businesses sometimes can't afford that extra expense.. it's literally make or break for them. And sometimes they can't get approved to take credit cards. The approval process has gotten more and more strict between the Patriot Act and the crumbling of the big banks.

And then there are people who simply think banks and credit card companies are the effing devil and they don't want to work with them when they can avoid it.

I've worked with enough business owners to know that they ARE aware that not taking credit cards may lose some customers.. but they also lose a lot of potential fraudsters. A lot of these folks aren't interested in growing their business into the stratosphere of profit.. they are often focused on their service or product and improving it to a degree that it becomes a 'must have'. You'd be surprised at how many people are willing to purchase using cash or check when they know the product is worth it!

US merchants CAN require a minimum purchase on credit card purchases up to $10. They cannot require a minimum on debit card purchases.

Interestingly.. they CANNOT give a discount for cash per their merchant agreement. Well.. they can't 'charge more' for credit... but same difference.

It only bothers me if I don't know up front. However most places I've been to that don't accept credit cards do accept checks, and I always have my checkbook with me.

It doesn't bother me per say - as long as I know ahead of time and I am prepared.

More and more people are getting those attachments for their Iphones. I know that it is pretty cheap that way.

I understand that through a regular phone line can be pretty expensive for a smaller merchant or vendor.

Either that are they are scamming on taxes Chat Icon

It bothers me because I know that means they aren't declaring their full income and paying taxes. I almost always use credit cards at places notorious for not declaring their income like nail salons, pizzerias..if I have to pay taxes, so do they Chat Icon

I always thought this was the case, but how do gas stations get away with it?

Re: Do "Cash Only" businesses bother you?

It does bother me because a lot of the time I don't carry cash. I do understand certain places like mom and pop farm stands but major businesses, it bothers me.

I was at the hospital the other day unexpectedly for someone and after a couple of hours was hungry and thirsty. The cafeteria didn't accept cc and I had zero cash on me so in that case, yes it annoyed me.

I'm not trying to argue, I'm honestly curious . . . Do you know how/if this applies to gas stations? I'm guilty of not paying attention to prices but DH always says many of them charge more for credit cards. Are gas stations an exception to this rule or are they breaking the agreement?

I'm confused, doesn't cash make it easier for them to avoid taxes?

Sometimes because I rarely carry cash. If it's a place that I know and like- I make sure to have cash after my first visit there.

I was going to ask this question too! It drives me nuts that I have to pay more at the gas station to use a credit card!

The gas stations will say that the regular price is the credit price - the cash price is a discounted price since you're paying in cash.

The gotcha is, if that was really the case, then the main advertising boards should show the higher credit price, and not the cash price. Chat Icon

Re: Do "Cash Only" businesses bother you?

My father's business was cash only. In the height of his business (Id say from the 60s through the 80s), people really didn't use credit cards the way they did now. My parents got one in the 80s just so they could rent a car and til they died, they really only used it to accrue airline miles. My father used to only carry cash in his wallet. Not taking cards was an expense he didn't want to or need to incur. It was also much harder to get credit cards back then. People couldn't get credit. Nowadays, anyone and everyone can and does. I know so many people with mounds of credit card debt because their eyes are bigger than their wallets. I've even been there myself. In the 80s and 90s you never heard about credit reduction services the way you do now. Its all relative to the time we live in - at least that's my opinion.

I said "sometimes" ... because it only bothers me if I want to go there.. have no cash... and it forces me to have to go to the bank first Chat Icon If I'm fully loaded at the time I leave my house, it doesn't bother me at all.

Gas stations also have different agreements based on their sic/industry code. They get special pricing that is not the same as other merchants. Some larger chain stores also have their own pricing that rides right along interchange just because they can afford to do it!

Accepting credit cards isn't cheap. I don't blame businesses one bit for doing cash only. I think it's not a fabulous draw and they probably lose some business because of it.. but that's life!

ITA.

My parents used to own a small card/gift shop and people would try to charge $1.00 card or their lotto expenses (which is not allowable by law BTW), and they would fight with them tooth and nail about it even though they clearly had a sign that said $10 minimum for cc purchases. They paid really high fees for cc purchases so anything under $10 they were losing from their profit.
