It is more of an issue for people who work in hosptials who are constantly in contact with "hosptial acquired bugs" which are more resistant to regular means of bacteria removal.
That is the reason for not having long nails in the hospital, but the reason for not having tips is because- Obviously everyone here washes their hands (even more so when they have babies)... But, its the Moisture that gets in between the tips and the nails and the other tiny spaces, that serves as the reservoir for bacterial growth... anyone who has tips has significantly more bacteria growing in their nails that someone without them- regardless of if they're in a hospital setting or not

I have an acrylic overlay on my real nails. Have always had them before & after DS was born. I keep them long & my DS is and has been fine (he is 6). I am lost and cannot function when they are short. They are not obsenely long but not super short either.
