No, I never have, I feel like I can handle it if I did (I know I say that now & I'd probably regret it if I did get the flu)
I'm so up in the air about giving it to DD. I still didn't give it to her because I feel that is cruel to give her a shot that I wouldn't get myself.
On the other hand, she's only 1 & a half, what if she gets it & is too little to handle it?
We've been lucky & healthy so far but after I read up on it a little more I'll decide if I'm going to give it to her.
Sorry I got off the original topic of ME getting it, all the other thoughts just came out with itChat Icon

I am like you- never had a flu shot in my life and I really don't feel comfy geting one. I just always worry about reactions. I dont' even take meds if I don't have to- I freak out about side effects

But the reason I give it to DD is that the flu is worse in babies and young children and also she is in daycare which is just a breeding ground for every bug known to man.
I feel like if I got the flu I could handle it as a strong healthy adult, but with a young immature immune system I worry about her.
So that's just my line of thought in regards to what you posted.
I know it's a hard decision to give them any vaccine.

Same here.

Both DH & I don't get it but we do have DS get it, because I just don't think he can hadle it like we can. DH got the flu 2 years ago and he was knocked off his asss for a week - just literally out of it all.

I don't want to see DS like that.

As for the deaths and severe "outbreak", it's all media hype. Last year was ssssooo mild that people forget we go through this all the time. Yes, anyone, especially a child, dying from the flu is horrible but look at the actual #'s compared to the population. Plus, what are they omitting from the reports? Are these all really otherwise healthy people? Most likely no, although they may not know they had other health issues at the time.

No, none of us get the flu shot. We will use Oscillococcinum if one of us gets the flu.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

What is Oscillococcinum?
I feel like I have seen it in the store but never stopped to see what it was...

Oscillococcinum is a homeopathic remedy to help alleviate flu symptoms. I have personally never had to take it because I have never had the flu but know people who have used it and found it effective. Also, my brother s a Homeopath and has given it to patients and found it to be effective in alleviating symptoms and shortening the duration.

Simply SHOCKED you think the Flu is media hype.

Look no one is going to convince you or anyone else that the flu shot is a good idea. Thats fair. Especially when there is the mentality of "Its not that bad actually" and "Its just hype".

The ER'ds are flooded. People and children are dying from the flu this year.

And if you have an underlying problem, or god forbid, one you DONT know about? All the better to be protected.

I just dont understand how people think the flu is JUST "The Flu".

Its deadly. It kills people.

I'm with ya. It's not hyped this year..at all. I have 4 nurse friends...they said you would not believe what their flu patients have dealt with. And my DH's coworker was out for a month and was a healthy adult who almost died..that is how sick he was!! They tested him for meningitis because of his symptoms. he is JUST back at work after almost 5 weeks and said he honestly thought he was dying and so did the hospital staff.

The flu can be tolerated by many people and usually is. But with a bad strain, it can be a different story. The things I've heard about this one are scary. But I always take the flu seriously, and I'm sure anyone in this world who has experienced a bad flu will tell you they will never think of it as overhyped again.

I completely agree. It's a very serious matter. I am vaccinated as is DH and even our parents. DS is only 4.5 mos so he cannot get it yet.

ETA: Boston seems to have it the worst (I think with 18 deaths?) and in-laws are from Boston - they see DS all the time. MIL got the flu and couldn't even shower for a week. Thank God we weren't there for Christmas this year bc that's when she had it.

DS just got over the flu. He went back to school today. In his class of 15, 6 children and the teacher were all out today because of the flu! When we went to get tamiflu for DS, and me and DH, we had to call A LOT of different pharmacies, as it is out. While DS is thankfully ok, I can see how children with other breathing problems or immune issues can be severely injured from the flu. I felt horrible for him.

I know "the flu" is real, what is hyped is the term outbreak and making something sensational over the fact that deaths occur. They occur every year. And I have had the flu 3 times in my life. Once as a kid and twice as an adult. It sucked but so did a few surgeries I have had. I really think that last year's very mild season is making this year seem worse than it is. I live on LI, most people I know are not vaccinated and I only know of 1 reported flu case that was probably not even the flu but was diagnosed as the flu by a crowded ER. I am sorry for anyone that has it, gets it or has to watch their kids deal with it. But it is something that has been around forever and will be. I honestly believe that over vaccination for things like the flu lead to lower natural immunities in the population at large.

Re: Did YOU get the flu shot?

No, DH and I did not get the flu shot. The only year we got it, we both got TERRIBLE flu. Coincidence? Perhaps. Perhaps not.

We went back and forth with whether to give it to our kids, considering they were in school/daycare etc. and as of now are not going to.

My 2 cents - just my opinion - it's so hard to really do "research" on it because there really is no credible news source that is not in some large or small way, bought by special interests. My concerns are the possible side effects - like that guillain-barre (sp) syndrome that attacks your nervous system and causes paralysis. YES I realize there is a one in a million chance of that, but there is also a one in a million chance of DYING from the flu. IF you get the flu, it may be miserable for a bit but chances are you will recover.

My other vent is the fact that vaccine makers are shielded from all liability for defective vaccines that may cause problems. If they were so safe then why do they need immunity? It just doesn't sit right with me, they should stand behind their "life saving" product.

Some sources put the Gullian Barre risk at 1 in 100,000. Still quite low, but not 1 in a million. Also, many people have concerns about the mercury and formaldehyde in the shot. Interestingly, the shot was banned in Australia, Finland and Sweden following a number of adverse reactions in children. I don't know if the ban was lifted.

Re: Did YOU get the flu shot?

Yes, I did as did DS. DH did not get it and no amount of convincing will make him do it, trust me, I've triedChat Icon . My issue is that DS DOES have breathing problems and no vaccine works 100% with everyone, so if DH gets sick of it, I can only pray that DS and I developed immunity from the vax (BTW, this is fact with all vaccines, so to not get a flu vax strictly because it may not work, may not be the best rationale).

I work in healthcare and I can assure you, it's no joke. Ive worked in the same hospital for 5 years and I have NEVER seen anything like what is going on now in all of the years I've been there. The statistics are reporting this year's flu is the worst its been in 10 years! Young people who were otherwise healthy are dying or even going into respiratory distress (needing to be trached, vented, can't swallow, can't speak, hospitalized for extended periods). It's no joke...it's not just a bad cold that is self-limiting.

ETA: DS has had the flu shot every year. He's never had any bad reaction besides crankiness and a sore arm. He does not, and will never, get the live vax.

36,000 people die every year from the flu in the US, on average. 36,000. How is that media hype? From the CDC

I honestly don't understand the reasoning behind the thinking of "it's something that has been around forever and always will be." Lots of diseases were "around forever" until modern medicine helped out, and society as a whole is better and healthier now than we ever were thanks to vaccines like this.

I got it as well as my two kids. I'm pregnant and the flu is the last thing I want to deal with while in my condition. My kids have got it since they were old enough and they have never had the flu. I know the shot might not protect us from every strain of flu out there but I'll take the extra insurance against the nasty ones. For me, it's more than just getting back to health, it's DH taking off work to help care for the kids, and having to take care of them while being sick when he can't take off that I dread. Then, us having to take off work to take care of them if they got sick. With no family around, it's a juggling act and I'd rather not deal with it!

I work in a hospital and while I'm not in patient care, I hear first hand how bad it is. Even some of our employees have been out for days with it.

Hype= acting like this is new that people are getting the flu and die from it. 36,000 (on avg) out of over 315,5000,000 people. About the same as auto accident related deaths.
Here is why it is hyped: CDC says flu season starts early. So every sniffle, cough and fever, people freak out. They start flooding Er's and doctor's offices. They get overwhelmed and the "flu" gets diagnosed due to the inability to really assess everyone. The flu should be diagnosed via blood test. And this is why people die. B/c they don't have the flu, they do have something like an upper respiratory infection that gets undiagnosed, untreated and goes into pneumonia. The person that I referred to early, raging UTI that mimiced flu symptoms (aches, fever, fatigue). Went to a busy ER, dx flu... 2 days later near uroseptic. So, if he would have died it would have been blamed on the flu. Thankfully his primary realized the ER's error and got him on the right meds. So that is why I feel that the hype plays into the mess and makes matters worse.

this statement could not be further from the truth. are you a healthcare professional? i have worked in the hospital for 11 years and this is BY FAR the worst year we have ever seen. people die from the flu, it is a fact. and people also can have long term serious effects from the flu.

the flu is not "diagnosed as flu by a crowded ER", you have to test positive and the results are sent to the state. it is not like a virus where they can tell you you have it when you really don't.

So that is why I feel that the hype plays into the mess and makes matters worse.

he went to an ER here on LI that diagnosed the flu without doing a nasal swab? or a walk in clinic type place? we don;t diagnose anyone with the flu where i work without a positive test.

and as far as flu deaths being the same as auto accidents? don't we do things to try and prevent deaths from auto accidents? so why wouldn't we do things to prevent death from the flu?

i am not trying to change someones mind on the flu shot, it is a personal decision and i respect that. but to say things are hyped up is just not true. our hospital is seeing a huge influx of flu patients, there is a nursing home with a quarantined area b.c of the flu etc.

Yes.

that is scary! everyone should know that they there is a test to check for the flu.

but please, realize this year is not hyped up. i totally respect your feeling on the flu shot. but this is not a media hype type thing. in my almost 11 years in the ER i have never seen anything like this.
