regarding Joe the Plumber

Obama's plan EXEMPTS small business owner's like joe the plumber's

isn't this a good thing? Chat Icon

Where does it say that? When has he said that? He concurs that businesses that make over $250k will be taxed more. He has even tried to justify it w/ there will be more money out there for the consumers to use anyway, so it won't matter and that supposedly most small businesses make less than that. I have never heard him say that small businesses were exempt. If anything I have heard the contrary from Obama himself.

it was reported right after the debate finished - from the fact checker....

i haven't followed the details behind obama's policy regarding small business - i'm trying to find it online now....

By whom? If that were the case, wouldn't it have been more efficient for Obama to just say that these businesses would be exempt instead of saying that most small business don't make that much, so it won't effect them?Chat Icon

If you are an S-Corp your tax rate will be close to 50%. I have the info in a folder that my accountant gave me on both plans b/c I asked him. Obama's plan would NOT be good for my small business.

ETA: I do not make $250K a year.

Seriously, we cannot tell the future. They both can be great or they both can suck. Do we really know what the future will hold?

You are absolutely right, except with Obama I will be paying alot of money for that happiness or sadness. If his economic policy wasn't so radical and insane, I would at least listen to his other ideas, but I can't get past the taxes. i can't - he calls it fair, but how is it fair to me and my DH who are busting our azzes everyday, have student loans larger than some people's mortgages and went to school forever.

I have student loans. I don't make a lot of money, neither does DH (Teacher and a case manager for those who have special needs). But to me it's just not fair that I have kids who can't afford school supplies, whose parents work 2 and 3 jobs to feed them. Overall I believe in capitalism... but at this rate we're going to have 2 classes... the haves and the have nots.

And frankly, with our two post-graduate degrees, we'll probably be a have not under mccain's plan.

But do you think that 250,000 is the right cutoff? I will be that 5% facing the highest tax increase in history. We are not making $500,00 or a million. So are we supposed to support the whole country? Am I supposed to be penalized b/c you chose to be teachers and case managers?

you chose to rack up $100,000 in loans...

I'll keep my poor career choice in mind when I watch the HS students in my area drive to school in the BMW's bought by their parents that make $300k a year.

Exactly!!
I chose to be a teacher, and I also chose to sacrifice so I could pay for grad school out of pocket to avoid student loans. I'll never make $250,000...but that's the choice I made.

Ok, I have $144k+ in student loans. I would not say I make a whole heck of a lot...under $250k anyway. However, I believe we have a right to pursue financial happiness. What the heck is wrong w/ making money??? Will someone explain that to me? I chose to spend some money, to make more money...and I would not change that for anything in the world. Think about the occupations that require such schooling for a second. If there were not higher wages attached to them would you expect a doctor to go to school (and pay for it) for as long as he/she does. How about a lawyer? How about a Speech Pathologist? I went into my field for many reasons. I wanted to help people...that was top priority, yes. However, do you think I would have gone through 6 years of school, in the most expensive grad program I have heard of ($800 per credit) if I wasn't going to make money from it? Why would I take out so many loans if the paycheck didn't justify it.

And I still need to add that there is a trickle-down-effect. The small businesses that get taxed will have to lay off employees...people making under $250k anyway. So try to justify it if you must, the long term effects will be devestating and will hurt all those it claims to help.

Can I ALSO add that some people chose not to further their education, chose what hours they work, and chose their jobs because of another unexpected choice they may have had to deal with? Like, an unexpected child they chose to keep?

Because people have to pay taxes. And there has to be some sort of a cutoff. Not everyone is going to be happy with any plan. But you have to know that when you make more money, you pay more taxes.....that's just how it works!

I don't get it

people want to make more money

but pay less taxes

it doesn't work that way

no one like taxes- but the people that make the most- should pay the most

why should the people that make the least shoulder the burden?

I will never forget that Warren Buffet said his assistant pays a greater percentage of her paycheck in taxes- the he does- sorry but that is wrong

exactly.....Those are choices you made...The worse part of all of this for me is the attitude of Why should I pay, why should I be penalized, why should I suffer?

What about unity? Community? Where has that GONE?

I make Nothing right now, I'm a SAHM and my husband makes enough for us to live on , thats about it...But If I have to pay more taxes so Seniors dont, or So I can provide for others who have less....

SO BE IT...thats life and I hope in return to get it back in return if I so need it.

Where are taxes might be going is another issue, but if you dont stand up to reform, fight for those taxes to be spent wisely etc, then you dont IMO have a say anyway...

My Best friends are small business owners and due to the economy just had to sell a store then bought less then a yr ago and they say...if they made over 250K, they would pay more, b/c they would be damn happy to make over 250K in the first place.

Rambling....sorry.

Why would I take out so many loans if the paycheck didn't justify it.

maybe because for some, teaching is so much more rewarding than any paycheck with tons of zeros

Yeah, I'm a speech pathologist...I know.

That's not my point though. People make it such a travesty that others make money and be-little the steps it takes to get them there. I just would like to know how many doctors or lawyers would go through the sacrifice (and as much as I myself have gone through in my clinical graduate program, doctors go through worse, longer hours)
if the paycheck was not there. I don't have a ton of zeros on my paycheck...far from it. I do not have issues w/ the people that are able to rack in that income though...good for them! I don't feel that just because they worked their azzes off to get there that they now have to turn around and take care of everyone else who didn't get there (myself being one of them), some with large debts.

palin won't be president unless mccain dies, which i sincerely doubt will happen. Obama is going to be president - that freaks the crap out of me.

i know Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'll keep my poor career choice in mind when I watch the HS students in my area drive to school in the BMW's bought by their parents that make $300k a year.

they probably make more than 300K a year - i drive a ford and my DH a 2001 honda - you are exactly right, we chose to rack up loans, we chose to work long hours, we chose to further our education. People chose not to further their education, people chose what hours to work, people chose their jobs. Point is, people make choices, but why will I be penalized and people that make other choices not penalized.

Ya know what, I'm not going to argue with someone who is ignorant to the hours and the heart I put into my job.

Enjoy your money. Just think about the kids in my class who can't afford glasses so that they can see the board while you do.

I do not think that most people, if given the choice would decide not to further their education. Not everyone has the opportunity to make this choice. Furthering your education also does not always lead to a bigger paycheck.

Because people have to pay taxes. And there has to be some sort of a cutoff. Not everyone is going to be happy with any plan. But you have to know that when you make more money, you pay more taxes.....that's just how it works!

AMEN!

If I am ever blessed to make $250K (on my salary alone) - then I'll GLADLY PAY MORE in taxes!!

I am well aware that people that make more should pay more taxes. However, the fact that Obama is willing to impose the largest tax increase in history on a couple who makes more than $250K is a little frightening, especially on a couple who barely makes more than 250K.
