Drug abuse needs to be treated medically, not criminally.

I'd like to remind people that the purpose of the Death Penalty is not to act as a punishment, it's meant as a deterent.

If the person can be rehabilitated, they should not be put to death.
Are we talking about a career criminal here? Remember, these were people who some of you had everyday interactions w/. You saw them as people. Have they lost their humanity in your hearts?

Really? You are acting as if he was just arrested for drug possession or something.
The issue here is not drug abuse.
It's murder.
There are millions of drug addicts out there- they don't all kill people to get their drugs.
It's apples and oranges.

exactly. Your argument is silly and does not add up.

Re: Death Penalty- Pharmacy shooter

First I want to say that while I believe in the death enalty in theory I do.not believe it has a place in our justice system. We do not utilize it on a way that exercises its primary function which is as a deterrent. Our system does not beleve in eye for an eye yet that is all putting someone to death is at the end of the day. And there aremore cases than I can stomach.of innocent people being put to death for me to feel comfortable.
That being said, being high does not mitigate responsibility in the eyes of the law. And I am sure we all know there is a huge difference bet a drug abuser and a murderer.
I think some of the responses to a.differing opinion on this thread are pretty ugly. Used to be you'd be banned for calling another person a name. I wonder if.the ptb are now coddlers too. Its a shame

Honestly? I feel our justice system is WAYYYYYY too lenient.

How many people would murder if we still had public executions?

Or how many child molesters/rapists would commit crimes if they were castrated for their crimes?

I'm sorry..cold blooded murder deserves no sympathy-I don't care if you were high/drunk/depressed/clinical/whatever..you took 4 lives, yours should be the 5th..no reason left for you to be on this earth

Yes. Any one who kills 4 people, including a high school aged CHILD, for no reason does not deserve to be called human... He is a monster, plain and simple.

And FWIW, I know people who are addicts (including family members) and none of them have ever done anything remotely like this. Being an addict and being a murderer are two completely different things.

ITA, Our justice system is way to lenient, and its redic that we will now have to pay all his lawyer fees, court fees, and pay to house this maggot for the rest of his life.

That is that he gets convicted and doesn't try to weasel out with an insanity plea or get acquitted or paroled after a few years

One bullet right in his head just like he shot those poor people.

How anyone can sympathize with this POS makes me want to scream

IDK where I stand on the DP.....

But I DEF see what you are saying here and I agree with you.

Child molesters and rapist get off with a slap on the wrist time and time again!! I'll bet to say if the repercussions were more in alignment with the crime, some would be less likely to commit the crime.

And honestly if David Laffer were to get the DP (not that he could in NY) I wouldn't have any ill feelings towards it. If he gets 4 consecutive life time sentences without possibility of parole... that's awesome too. SO long as he is never on loose on the streets again. He doesn't deserve freedom..... not even for his last breath!!!

And I can understand people not being for the DP... but I can't believe the ridiculous comments posted by bobby. Really? Ask the victim's families where they stand in 6 months? And the personal boundaries? He is a murdering criminal. I know MANY drug addicts.... NOT a single one has killed anyone!!! He's beyond rehab if you ask me. He belongs in jail with the rest of the criminals. And if his wife played ANY role... she belongs there as well. IDK how this could even be compared with a DWI car accident!! DWI car accidents are NOT AT ALL the same as shooting 4 different people in the head. sounds like some major reaching to me!

And IDK who wrote that they aren't sure his intent was to murder... pretty sure if you are shooting 4 people execution style in the back of the head... You know what the outcome will be. Real life isn't a cartoon, they aren't going to pop back up and say hi! Remember, he didn't just execute ONE, TWO, or THREE people... it was FOUR TIMES!!! You can't argue that he didn't mean to kill 4 people when he clearly turned the gun and aimed it directly at each of their 4 heads.

No need to even debate this topic. We do not have the death penalty I'm NYS. The most he will do is life without parole.

ITA w/all of this. Especially in a case like this where there is no doubt he is the killer. No free meals and health care and a bed to sleep in. Torture is appropriate IMO.

You got that right Kerri... My uncle molested his stepdaughter "My Cousin" from the age of 9 to 13 and got away with it by only wearing an ankle bracelet that would allow him to go as far as the neighborhood grocery store for a year... Please, mothers with there daughters would shop at that very same grocery store and he could have done anything in that parking lot or in his neighborhood... He didn't get a slap on the wrist, it was his ankle instead...

moot point. there is no dealth penalty in ny.. most likely will never be in such a liberal state.

im all for the dealth penalty.. 100% all for it. our jails are overflowing, our taxes are sky high (to pay for these low lives so they can have a place to sleep and food and recreation time)

so in this case as with many cases in ny, yes the dealth penalty is warranted.

there is no such thing as rehabilatition for this atrocious crime

No flames here -- I totally agree with everthing you said. I can't imagine, GOD FORBID, something like this happened to someone I loved, then the murderder gets to still breathe, eat 3 meals a day, etc. No friggin WAY.....if that makes me appear cold-hearted to some, I truly don't care. Life is so incredibly precious and short -- how DARE anyone take it away from someone.

Re: Death Penalty- Pharmacy shooter

There are plenty of addicts who rob pharmacies, convenience stores, etc. They may even brandish a gun. But they don't hurt anyone. THOSE people deserve rehabilitation and help to deal with their addiction.

I don't care how much of a junkie Laffer was. He took a gun and held it to FOUR people's heads (people who were defenseless and NOT fighting back) and executed them. And then he walked out like he had just purchased a pack of gum. That is a line that not everyone can cross - even desperate addicts at the end of their rope.

I believe in the principle of the DP - but I think letting him rot in jail would be a worse punishment for him. Hopefully the other inmates me his life VERY unpleasant.

just an fyi, putting people to death costs the taxpayers far more money than letting this animal spend the rest of his SOBER life in jail thinking about what he's done.

I love whoever posted 4 life terms, consecutive. yeah, that sounds real good to me. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon years and years in a max security cell getting raped by your fellow inmates over years and years on death row spending your time reading law books and writing appeals. NOPE. that is too easy.

Sometimes, the death penalty is too easy of a punishment.

Lethal injection...dead...where's the retribution?

I say to hardened criminals, let 'em rot...forever.

Let them fester for the rest of their lives. Let them REALLY pay for their crimes.

Death sometimes is the easy way out.

It needs to be treated medically AND criminally. When someone kills FOUR innocent people in COLD BLOOD, they need more than just drug rehab. They need to be PUNISHED.

Re: Death Penalty- Pharmacy shooter

If it was a case of robbery by a drug addict than maybe I can stand by incarceration along with rehabilitation but your talking about cold blooded murder here....video taped, hard evidence murder.
Most of our population has had or is having issues with drugs...they are killing themselves NOT going out into society and shooting innocent victims in the back of the head like animals. This guy was a COLD HEARTED PSYCHOPATH!!! To try and argue that point is beyond ridiculous.
Would I love to see him put to death OF COURSE!!! but you know what not only is it not part of NY's justice system it also costs us as taxpayers more to have him sitting on death row for the next 10 years trying appeal after appeal. Let him sit in complete solitary confinement for the rest of his god forsaken life and rot away....killing was his easy way out so why should we take the easy way out too (plus more expensive for taxpayers) LET THE MOTHA F*CKA ROT!! AND GIVE EVERY OTHER INMATE IN THAT JAIL A CHANCE TO HAVE A SHOWER SESSION WITH HIM 10X DAILY!!

Yeah lethal injection costs more, so lets get rid of it and bring back public hangings. Cheap and more effective.

Here lies my issue with the death penalty. Who gets to say that one crime deserves the death penalty and another one doesn't? The judicial system currently decides that and I personally believe that our judicial system is not perfect. Hence innocent people being put to death for crimes they didn't commit.

As much as I would love to see this guy die for what he did, because I don't suppor the death penalty, I am satisfied knowing that he will spend every last second of his life locked up in jail.

That's true... but you are still spending the rest of your life in jail. Behind bars. Forever. I wouldn't say that's a great way to spend every single second of every single day until the day you die.

No, but you still get to live. You still get to eat. You still get to sleep in a bed. You're still protected by the law. You're still able to be in touch with your family. You still get health care. AND you don't have to work for any of this, in fact people are paying your way. And this is your punishment? Why?

it's not the actual manner of execution that costs more. it's what happens BEFORE the execution that costs money, and unless they had sponsors, it would still cost the same amount if it were public.

our appeal laws are set up so that if there is attorney or trial misconduct, the convicted person can seek justice.

many of the people on death row are poor, and most of them are minorities. they are often times represented by 3rd rate public defenders and/or prosecuted by sometimes overzealous municipalities so "sure" they have the right person that they make sure the evidence leads in that direction.

It may not be the case HERE, but it IS true for certain cases, and as long as sloppiness and egos can interfere with real justice, the death penalty will never be foolproof.

Im tired of people using the influence of drugs and/or alcohol as an excuse for behaviors. Enough already. Bring the man to justice. Sucking my last tax dollar so he can eat, sleep and "get treatment" while I wonder how I am going to afford to send my kids to college while he rots is NOT justice. Yeah, I said it.
