Daycare/Babysitter Vent

For various reasons we need to change Jake's daycare situation. I've been looking since he turned 1 and I'm getting soooo frustrated. Why is it so hard to find a full-time babysitter to come to your house for a REASONABLE rate?? Why do they expect to make $60k (ok exaggerating a bit) a year to babysit when they are still in school with no experience or are not in anyway professional childcare providers?

Geez...sometimes I think I went into the wrong career with the rates these people want. (I swear to you one woman wanted $18/hr!!!!) I could've stayed home all day with my son, watching a couple of other kids while amassing a small fortune apparently.

Yet I turn around and a co-worker or a friend finds a babysitter for like $40 a day (NOT exaggerating) or even less!! Chat Icon

Why have I been on daycare waiting lists for MONTHS now with no openings? Why do most daycares not do part-time? Or they SAY they do part time "at the regular full-time rate" - how does that make any sense???

If you have your mother or MIL around to watch your child you better thank your lucky stars - I SO wish I had that. Chat Icon

I feel your pain. I recently started searching for daycare/babysitters and can't believe the prices. I have twins, so it's doubly hard. I just wish I could stay home an be a full time mommy.Chat Icon

Re: Daycare/Babysitter Vent

I think finding a day care has been one of the most frustrating things I've had to deal with. We wanted to put Nate in a day care center, but none of them in our area (or ones we could afford) had openings. I just got a postcard from a center we went to see back in April, saying that they don't have openings but we are still on the waiting list. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Daycare has been one of the hardest things to coordinate and deal with. I found the best luck by asking local neighbors with little ones or checking church community boards. We were lucky to find a great local sitter who watches a few other kids as well.

One of my neighbors watches children 2 houses away... she wants $9/hr which doesn't sounds reasonable but it works out to $1700 a month. Chat Icon Um...I can find tons of daycares (oops I mean waiting lists) for way cheaper with certified professionals.

As for craigslist...I posted an ad about a month ago - all the women that responded wanted around $2000/month.

One "kid" -and by kid I mean she was 20 yrs old - wanted $2200/month.

I can understand asking that much if this was through an agency and this is your career that you were trained for and you are certified, etc. But if you are somebody's grandmother who wants me to bring my child to your house so you can "sit on your azz and eat bon-bons all day" Chat Icon and make two grand a month for it, you are outta your mind.

I did find a couple of ads that I responded to though so we'll see how that works out Chat Icon

Re: Daycare/Babysitter Vent

where are you looking. I found an amazing daycare in Oceanside and we enrolled her 2 weeks before DH went back to work (he went back three months earlier than we had planned)

I pay 1365 a month for 8 hours a day five days a week.

They do 3 days a week for 900.

FM me if you need help.

Thanks Kelly Chat Icon I think you and I spoke about your daycare before and while it sounds great and I know you are happy with Bella there - they are too far out of my way, unfortunately. Chat Icon But thanks - I didn't know they did part time. Chat Icon

Re: Daycare/Babysitter Vent

This is the exact reason JT switched jobs to stay home during the days with Ava. We'd be penniless if we had to have someone watch her or put her in daycare, and that was just a few days a week we needed.Chat Icon

Re: Daycare/Babysitter Vent

I agree with you about how difficult and expensive it is. I found 2 places that do part-time -- Tutor Time and KinderCare. I only need 1 day a week, and at Tutor Time it was $55 for the 1 day, and at KinderCare it was $79! It is a big difference, but I think we are going to go with KinderCare. I liked the place better, and it is closer to DH's job. We just found out when he will be going back to work, so we really need to go and get her registered before we lose the spot.
