More respect for the law needs to be taught to kids also. My husband just told my kid that if you get pulled over and they ask you to quack like a duck, you quack like a duck. You do as you are told.

There have been incidents where police take advantage of young women.
I don’t think police should be judge, jury, and executioner. I also think they need 4 year degrees and ongoing psych exams.
A four year degree requirement is going to make for a lot less police. Which depending on who you talk to might be the goal. I believe you need a 4 year degree to be promoted to certain ranks.
Studies show that officers who have four year degrees tend to de-escalate and don’t have to use their weapon as much.
Only 30% of officers have a 4 year degree. I think that’s scary.
If lawyers have to go to school for years and years to learn the law, cops shouldn’t be “qualified” in a matter of weeks to carry weapons and uphold/enforce the law.
Initial police training in the academy is 6 months. If police need to be educated like lawyers, they should be paid like lawyers. Not sure if many departments are willing to do that.
It’s a pretty serious position when you (not you, but collectively) think about it.
Anyway, most are paid very well.
According to a recent New York Times piece (about a week or so ago), in 2019, more than 1,200 officers — nearly half the force — took home over $200,000 a year.

Long Island civil servants have it pretty good when it comes to salary and job satisfaction. I think civil servant who work in the boroughs generally have to deal with a lot but they are usually not compensated as well as those in the suburbs. Better cops in the suburbs since there is less crime right? I guess all the cops in the boroughs must be terrible since there is more crime.

Has what never happened to a white person? Getting mistreated by a police officer because of their color? I think everyone can safely say the answer to that is no. I am sure white people have been mistreated by police officers, but the reason for that mistreatment was not because they were white.
I don’t believe that for a second.
So what you are saying is that black cops or anyone other than white have never mistreated a person because they are white?
If it has happened, they were extremely isolated incidents. The fact that you can't see POC are treated very differently than white people tells me everything I need to know about you. Stop making this about white people being victims.
Just because you don’t hear about it plastered all over the media doesn’t mean it is not happening.

Don’t you need a 4 year degree now to become a police officer? Are we speaking of “older” people who went into the force right after high school?

At this point, let's just admit that there will always be people who do not believe in white privilege and have no clue what white privilege even really means. I am considered lucky I was born white...and I shouldn't be considered lucky because of that. Every single child born onto this planet deserves EQUAL treatment, rights, health care, education, and opportunities. That is not the case.
The only thing more heartbreaking than watching this continue to happen is that so many don't believe it is continuing to happen. Instead they turn white people into the victim..."but it happens to us too, the media just doesn't care!". Yes, us poor, poor suppressed white people.

Personally I hope that there is a huge decline in people who want to go into law enforcement. Then people might start to understand and respect the impossible position that the police force has been put in.
And this is why she will probably walk away with a 20k fine and no jail time.
Did anyone else read how she was training someone at the time of the killing?

She doesn't deserve jail or a fine in my opinion. She was doing her job and she made a mistake. This is not something that would have been fixed with better training. It was a split second decision that resulted in a horrific accident.
I think most of the people who want to see her go to jail are coming from a position of privilege that they never had to have a member of their immediate family in law enforcement. That's a privilege I would have liked to know growing up. I would have loved to not have had to go to bed every night worrying if my father would come home. But I digress....
And I know I have white privilege. I know I have a TON of privilege in addition to my white privilege. That doesn't take away my view that this woman does not deserve to be charged with manslaughter.
I truly hope that in the near future no one decides to pursue a career in law enforcement. I've actually been saying it for years.

When a doctor makes a mistake and it harms or kills their patient they are often times held accountable. There should be accountability for those in law enforcement especially when it ends in death

That sounds like a great idea but do you think it is possible with the salary they make? If that happens then there will be less people in law enforcement, it wouldn’t be a career worth pursuing for many.

Honestly if I were a cop now unless a person was in imminent danger I would do nothing. I believe the NYPd dismantled the anti crime unit and that is why crime is on the rise.

We have a growing violent crime rate that’s reaching 1970s levels in many major (democratic, black-dominated) urban areas. Many cops are afraid to do their jobs-and rightfully so.

I was told from the day I got my permit. If you get pulled over you leave both hands on the steering wheel and if you need to get your license or registration you tell the officer where it is and ask permission to get it. You don’t talk back. You don’t argue. I was also taught to obey the law, but that’s another story.

As horrible as this is, this is not the normal when getting stopped. The point is you comply and don’t resist when being pulled over.

Just because an individual is resisting arrest, does not mean the cop has the right to kill them. I am not saying it's ok for people to resist arrest, but the idea that you must always respect authority is concerning. My children are very respectful of adults. They are very well behaved and never give teachers one single problem. We have high expectations of our children. That being said, I would never be ok with my DH telling my children they must always do what an adult says, no matter what. Teachers, police officers, priests, coaches, even family members, are capable of using that authority to do pretty terrible things.
