Coxsackie ???? UPDATED AT TOP WITH NEW QUESTION WWYD????

we are suppose to go to a small pool party/BBQ tomorrow one of the kids got coxsackie and has been on antibiotics for 4 days - sunday will be day 5 for the antiobiotics - is it okay to go or are they still contagious??
The mom said the pediatrician said he was fine but I thought you had to be on antibiotics for a week?
I do not want DD catching it!

NEW QUESTION - thank you for all of your responses. i told the host that we will not be coming.
HOWEVER the infected family has an older daughter (around 5 years old) and she offered to keep the younger son home and just come with the older daughter. the mom is saying that she has no signs at all. Would you go now?????

Re: Coxsackie ????

I'm confused...why is he on antibiotic for coxsackie? Coxsackie is a virus and antibiotics are ineffective in treating it. Perhaps he has some sort of secondary bacterial infection?? Are you sure it's coxsackie?

Coxsackie is not treatable with antibiotics. It's a viral infection. It's contagious as long as there are blisters. Since water is a very happy medium for spreading the virus...I would not allow my child to be in a small pool with an infected child. I would decline.

Coxsackie is a virus.. so not sure why the kid would be on antibiotics.. Chat Icon Chat Icon
My DS just had coxsackie a month ago.. I wouldn't want that kid in the pool with my kid though... that is one place where coxsackie is most likely to spread..

I am not really comfortable with this whole situation. However, if I tell my one friend, who is hosting, that we are not coming, she is going to cancel the BBQ and I am just feeling bad (it is only going to be the three families - us, the host and the infected family- we all have kids). But like I said, I do not want DD catching it at all!!!

I think you should pass....really I think the infected family should decline...its viral so they could easily still spread it! my babies had it and it is terrible!!!!!!

Re: Coxsackie ????

As others have posted, its viral, antibiotics will do NOTHING for it. As long as there are still blisters, then THAT child should remain at home.

Re: Coxsackie ????

It is not treatable by antibiotics and is contagious for as long as there are sores. I would not go or ask that they not go.

You don't take antibiotics for coxsackies. I would say probably 4 days of it - might very well still be contagious - but who knows. It is a virus and antibiotics don't cover viruses.

I still wouldn't go. It is highly contagious. I caught it from DD#1 when I was pregnant with DD#2 even though I cloroxed everything and washed my hands all day long. But she was drooling a lot from the sores in her mouth and it was all over. Remember that there IS an incubation period and you can be contagious with virus sometimes 24 hours before you show symptoms. My concern would be that she might be feeling fine now but could still be contagious.

I definitely would not go. Even though the older daughter is fine now, doesn't mean she isn't getting it. I wouldn't risk it for a BBQ.

Re: Coxsackie ???? UPDATED AT TOP WITH NEW QUESTION WWYD????

Why is the infected family still coming?? No, no, no. Anyone can be incubating it. Not safe, IMO, and rude for THEM not to cancel.

I would trust your gut and stay home Chat Icon

Re: Coxsackie ???? UPDATED AT TOP WITH NEW QUESTION WWYD????

WHY is this women so unwilling to just stay home and totally cut out the risk. I would not go, STILL.
FROM THE DEPT OF HEALTH:

Coxsackie Virus - Fact Sheet

What is coxsackie virus?
It is an infection caused by the virus Coxsackie. It is also known as hand, foot, and mouth disease.

How is the virus spread?
Coxsackie viruses are spread through close personal contact. This can occur when there is direct contact with nose, throat, and fecal discharges of infected persons.

Who gets coxsackie virus?
Anyone can be infected, but the disease seems to occur predominately in children under ten years of age.

When can a person spread the virus to to others?
A person may spread the virus to to others just prior to the onset of symptoms, during the acute stage of illness and perhaps longer, since this virus may persist in the stool for several weeks. The incubation period is usually 3-5 days.

What are the symptoms and when do they appear?
Symptoms develop three to five days after exposure. Most children will complain of a sore throat or sore mouth and loss of appetite. Fever of 101-102 lasts 1-2 days and is usually accompanied by sores in the mouth. Sores can also occur on the hands and feet and occasionally on the buttocks. The illness is mild and lasts one week or less.

What is the treatment?
At this time, there is no specific treatment.

What can be done to prevent the spread of this disease?
Particular attention should be paid to hand washing and personal hygiene.
