Changing school districts - multiple questions here

Right now I have my kids in a daycare which is open year round. My son is in the full day nursery school there and my kindergartener attend after care at same facility. It’s very convenient because my kindergartener can attend on school breaks and throughout the summer. After my youngest completes pre-k next year though we will be moving. So my first question is this:

I don’t see any daycares in the area I am moving to that offer a similar scenario. What does everyone do during the school breaks, and more specifically, the 2 weeks in the summer before school starts when camps don’t seem to be in session? I have very limited help.

Also, my son was evaluated by the current district and will be receiving services in pre-k next year. Will his IEP follow him to the new district? Do I do the kindergarten screening at the end of year even though I know he will be moving? My oldest does not have an IEP I am not familiar with any of this..

The IEP follows, but the new district will also reevaluate him. I haven’t heard of districts doing the day care thing you are mentioning, but I guess it depends on the district?

The daycare setup you have is pretty rare. Were they going to take your kids through elementary school?

During school breaks people take time off, hire a sitter, sometimes there are “vacation camps” at YMCA, dance schools, gymnastics places, sports places. You have to look around. However they are typically a shorter day so you still might need a sitter for part of the day.

If you know where your going, try to join the local Mom's group on Facebook. They have all the answers. In our district we do have a few daycares that over before/after care that pick up from school and would cover school breaks. Most of the families though hire a sitter for those times the kids are off and you have to work. The IEP will follow your child until they retest. No need to do the kindergarten screening as you'll do it in your new district.

I only work part time from home but our schools offer MAX which provides programs before and after school, as well as on school breaks and holidays. You pay by the day, week or month depending on your needs. See if the district you are going to offers something similar. I believe most districts do.

What area are you in? I’ve never heard of this. Most people in my area/surrounding towns scramble to find coverage for breaks. That’s really helpful.

Manhasset but I have heard of a lot of districts that have the same thing. Before and after care and then programs over the break!

Yes the day care I am at now has aftercare so if it were not for us moving they would have stayed there for elementary and been able able to do after care and school breaks up until age 12.

I will probably try to look into hiring a sitter for the school vacation breaks
