Catholics what do you give as a gift for first communion?
Do you give money? how much ? or do you give some kind of a gift ?
Oh and this is for a close relative.

For a close relative-- $$$ (around 100) and a nice keepsake like a cross necklace or rosary beads or bible.

$100 really? Good thing I asked bc I was thinking more like $20 or 30 ( I'm not Catholic so I don't know anything about it , and DH is Catholic but he doesn't really know about all that stuff) or I was thinking of a cute gift for around the same price.
I am Orthodox Christian and so is DD. She just had her first communion last week but most of the family doesn't even know that she did.
As Orthodox Christians We don't dress up, invite family and have a party, and we definitely don't give or receive money or gifts. We just go to church, attend 3 hr mass and get the communion and go home(even for the first one)
Oh well I guess I'm gonna have to get used to it.

I'm Catholic but haven't been to any first communions other than my own, and my younger brothers. We have one coming up for DH's cousin's son (who was our Ring Bearer) but we'll be away so we will have to miss it. I think they're doing a "party/get together" afterwards and didn't know what we should get him as a gift. I'm surprised too to hear $100 is the common gift amount - simply because there aren't many of these parties in our families or circle of friends.

since i wouldnt know if other family members are already giving her a cross. probably a piece of jewelery- earings or pendant.
amazon.com even has some good pieces for around $50

i got my goddaughter a bond ( for $500 ) and rosary beads
i wouldnt get a cross just bc that is what we do for baptisms
for any other family member i would give $100 bond and maybe a precious moments figurine for a girl or something little like that

in my family, communion is probably the biggest event until the wedding! sounds crazy but its a HUGE deal we even go out after and get professional pictures taken LOL just to give you some perspective  i still remember my communion day as the biggest event of my young life!

This is what I do.
ETA: I give 100 for family members and close friends plus a small gift. I give acquaintances/less close friends a $100 bond (costs $50) and a small gift like a bible, rosary beads, etc.. My goddaughter will get considerably more when she has her communion.

Italian catholics are a bit over the top for my confirmation I got my diamond name plate and a diamond initial ring LOL
