Here is a very informative video on the importance of keeping your baby in a rear facing car seat as long as possible!

Joel's Story- Car Seat Safety

ETA: Make sure that you are aware of your carseat's weight limit when using it rear facing. We use the Britax Marathon and it is safe to use the seat REAR FACING until DC is 35 pounds. Check your instructions that came with your carseat or check out the manufacturer's website! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Car Seat Video That All Parents of Infants and Toddlers MUST See! ADDED INFO IN OP!

Wouldn't rear facing possibly cause their legs to get slammed into the seat? Looking at that video it looks like the legs slam into the back seat.

I honestly don't know what to make of it because our pediatrician was very certain that they need to face forward at one year and 20 pounds. I feel for this family but I wonder if it's a rare instance that they went through and if it's actually safer. I would need more information then this before I disagree with the doctor and everything else I've ever heard or been told about it.

Starting in 2009, the American Academy of Pediatrics and NHTSA suggested that toddlers remain rear facing for as long as possible for their particular car seat. The minimum continues to be 1 year old and 20 lbs for forward facing. The rationale about having children remain rear facing until the seat limits for weight have been reached is to decrease the amount of trauma to the child's neck and spinal cord, ultimately causing paralysis and/or death. In an accident at high velocity, it is very possible that if a child is rear facing, he/she may have their legs injured by 'slamming into the seat' but I'd take 2 broken legs over the alternative any day.

Here AAP Car Safety Seats: Family Guide is the American Academy of Pediatric's webpage regarding car seat safety, where it states, "Infants should ride rear-facing until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by their car safety seat’s manufacturer. At a minimum, children should ride rear-facing until they have reached at least 1 year of age and weigh at least 20 pounds. When children reach the highest weight or length allowed by the manufacturer of their infant-only seat, they should continue to ride rear-facing in a convertible seat."

Edit for grammar

This may be a stupid question, but what about when the seat is rearing facing and you get hit in the back? Wouldn't that have the same effect has a head on collision with a front facing seat?

The difference here is the baby is going to continue traveling in the direction it was to begin with. (think of Newtons law of motion - an object in motion tends to stay in motion)

So if you are driving forward and the car is rear ended, the baby will continue to move forward, in which case the car seat with cradle the infant and absorb most of the shock.

If you are driving backwards and hit in the rear the baby will continue to move backwards and will not be cradled by the car seat, however there are two additional things to think about in this scenario:

- first when driving backwards you are usually going under 5MPH so the impact would not be that great (if the vehicle which hits you is going faster than you it will send the baby in the reverse direction(forward) in which case the car seat absorbs the shock

- second the angle of the car seat when rear facing is at more of an angle than forward facing, so the child will slide down towards the back seat, rather than be thrust forward.

Thank you Gabi!! I just checked my carseat and it is safe to use as a rear facing seat for children 5-35lbs. Thank you sooooo much for sharing!

Thank you for the info. I agree with I'd rather have 2 broken legs then the alternative. But I also know that legs slamming into something with a lot of force can also cause spinal injuries. So I would be concerned for that as well. My DS turned one last year and I'm surprised that the doctor was so certain about turning the car seat forward if this information was available.

Re: Car Seat Video That All Parents of Infants and Toddlers MUST See! ADDED INFO IN OP!

I must thank the original poster for this. I have been fighting this fight for years.

The concept of turning around at a year and 20 pounds has not been the recommendation for at least 8 years.

Please, keep your children rear facing at least 2 years. There are some cases where a child does have to turn forward facing before that, but the following excuses are not acceptable to turn a child around:

1) He/she complains about rear facing -- you are the parent you set the tone of what is acceptable or not.

2) His/her lfeet are touching the back of the seat --- short of the legs being completely "pretzeled up" there is no reason to be concerned about touching feet -- it is easier to fix a broken leg then a broken spine or neck.

3) I can't see the baby -- You need to keep your eyes on the road, that will keep your baby safer.

4) My pediatrician said it is ok to turn the baby around -- unfortunately too many pediatricians don't read their own publications.

My main question for parents that want to turn a baby around forward facing or even remove a child from a 5-point harness to a booster too soon -- WHAT IS THE RUSH?

http://www.carsafety4kids.com/rearfacing.html
Is it dangerous to have my child's legs bent and/or his feet touching the seat?

No, this is not a safety hazard. There are no documented reports of children breaking their legs or hips in a crash. However, there are countless cases of forward-facing children with spine or neck injuries. In a crash, a rear-facing child's legs will be thrown up and back away from the vehicle seat. It's important to note that children are very flexible and do not find riding this way uncomfortable. What looks cramped to an adult is fine for a child.

While doctors are well educated, and are looking for their patients' best interests, they are human, and cannot know absolutely everything about everything. We are always finding out about newer and better things, including rear-facing longer. We are woefully behind most of Europe in keeping DC safe in cars. Many countries have laws keeping DC rear-facing until 3 or 4.

As parents, we should always be looking for additional information, and not relying 100% on what our Drs say, especially when it comes to safety. If a Dr says one thing about something he deals with on a cursory basis differs from what teams of experts who do only car seat testing for decades, I would tend to side with the cumulative hundreds of years of expertise.

ITTTTTTA. I go to my ped when my kid has an ear infection or a fever. As far as car seats, I will do my own research. Luckily our family Dr was aware of this and we discussed it.

Their legs will actually bend in towards their body at the hips and knees on impact. The seat will absorb the majority of the crash forces and the remaining forces will be distributed evenly across the child's body. In a forward facing collision, the crash forces are distributed less evenly and more forces are applied to a child's head and neck. A very young child's spinal cord can only stretch 1/4" before it snaps, yet there spinal column itself can stretch up to 2". The vertebrae are in 3 pieces and don't begin to ossify into one piece until 3-6 years of age.

If you are still unsure after all of the other information posted, print this out and bring it with you to your next appointment to discuss with your phsycian http://aapnews.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/30/4/12-a This was an article posted last year, but the official AAP policy since 2002 is to rear face to the limits of the seat. The "1 and 20" mantra is outdated but very easy to remember and unfortunately has stuck.

In Sweden, they have been rear facing through age 4/5 for many years and have the lowest rate of deaths in accidents in the world.

Graduating to the next level in car seats is NOT a milestone to be celebrated like a birthday. Like CarSeatChris said, "What's the rush?"

Broken leg? Cast it
Broken neck? Casket.

I, too, hope this gets pinned. Joel's story is quite compelling. He is recovering but still has many hurdles. His site is here http://www.joelsjourney.org/ and occasionally Grandpa posts updates on www.car-seat.org (another great car seat resource with many techs, a great place to find a tech if you're not local to LI and can't get in to see CarseatChris)

This is a Norwegian video which shows computer animation of what happens in a collision for a front facing vs a rear facing child in a car seat.

They, like Sweden, encourage use of a rear facing seat until a child is 4 years old.
