Can people go through your garbage?
A random pick-up with two guys was going through my garbage cans a few minutes ago. They took the plug from a broken lamp that was peaking over the top of the can.
I know people will sometimes pick up furniture or large toys at the curb but is it legal to actually open up someone's garbage cans and rummage through? I feel like this is an invasion of privacy.

There is a truck that comes around here too. As long as they aren't opening bags and looking for mail and ss numbers or leaving a mess I don't care. They took our tub, toilet, sink and vanity. Better they use it and recycle than it go to the dump.

Once it's on the curb anyone can go through it. I've seen criminal shows where police would get their evidence through a suspects garbage. A lot of people go around to collect scrap metal for money. Sounds like he was doing that in yours.

It bothers me because when we first moved in those guys stole our brand new all stainless steal BBQ off the top of my driveway with the moving truck in front of it! Then we caught one guy going through our dumpster that was on our driveway. God forbid he got hurt, he could have sued us! They stop at nothing for a few dollars from your "garbage". We also had a guy walk up to my back fence and ask dh if he could have a sink that we hadnt put out to the garbage yet. It makes me mad now when I see them. Although I have calmed down a bit since, and I don't mind if they take something from the street, but I really would rather them no where near my property.

Eh I'm used to it now. When I first bought my home it kind of caught me off guard. There's a little old man who goes around to take cans. DH one day left a tool next to the garbage when he was unloading his truck and it got picked up. Fortunately he realized and the guy was nice and gave it back.

This is not that same as going through your garbage at the curb.
If you catch them again on your property, you should say something to them.
If it was my property, I would have no problem addressing it.
If the stuff is at the curb. Yes they can go through it.

I wouldn't appreciate random strangers rummaging through my garbage cans. I have left appliances, etc at the curb for people to take but I would definitely be creeped out if they were going through my cans.

A guy patrols our neighborhood every Sunday night. one Sunday last summer, my DH was mowing the lawn. He stops for a second to go in the back yard to get something. I see from my front window this guy in the pick-up truck stop, get out and attempt to take the mower!! I run out and ask him what is he doing?? He said "oh, I thought you put it out for the garbage. I was going to take it for scrap metal" ??? Yea, ok buddy. But the next week when we did have our garbage out on Sunday night, he took the old TV antenna we had taken off the roof and put at the curb (yeah, we still had one from the 70's!!)

I would love to see someone go through my trash.2 kids in diapers, it would be a funny site to watch them rummage through poop infested garbage.

Can people go through your garbage?
We used to have a guy who would rummage for cans. I'd hear him in my driveway. I used to just fill up the bag for him and when I saw him I would just hand them to him. He stopped coming around awhile ago. Got worried but just him last week in a different part of town. I don't mind people who go through my trash but don't steal stuff that's just wrong and is call the police.

I would be creeped out if strangers were going through my trash bags to be honest. I guess the only thing you can do is keep the trash near your house and put it out right before they come to pick it up.

I have to say I would not like this and it would bother me. I've have seen many times guys in trucks coming around and taking big things we left at curb. Example would be an old stove, refridge, scrap metal type items. I'm 100% fine with them taking this stuff and so happy when they do. But I have never saw anyone stop and go through my garbage. At least I have never seen anyone and I'm home most days.
I would probably see around what time the garbage man came and put it out around then. Not in the morning.
Coming on your property is not okay. I don't care what they want. Shouldn't be coming up to your back fence asking.

Oohh it wasn't at the curb?? Yeah I'd be pissed too. I'd tell them they need to wait til it's at the curb and not to come on your property again!!

Once it is out at the curb, it's completely legal (which is why it's a good idea to shred/tear up/otherwise destroy) documents that have your SSN, bank account numbers, etc.
If it is up by your house, they are trespassing on your property and stealing, and you should call the police.
To the PP who said that they would specifically separate cans out to give it to the guy... that's awesome.

We have a guy and a woman that come around and goes through our recycle - looking for bottles and cans! I don't think they go through the garbage though!
I guess I'm just used to it now!

I wouldn't care if someone went through the recycle bin, and if I was tossing something large I would be fine if someone rescued it. But seeing someone in the garbage can- I would not be happy about that, mostly because I'd worry about them leaving a mess. It is hard enough keeping the raccoons from making a mess, if a stranger didn't bother to secure the lids right we would have a huge mess to clean up.

Going through it at the curb doesn't bother me at all. When I have big things or items I know someone will take I put them out so they are visable. Makes it easier for everyone. If they came onto my property that would be a completely different story.
