It was a gas explosion in some kind of residential building.
I can't believe what it looks like.
My god. I hope whoever was in that building got out safely. No word on that yet.

The news is reporting that is was a residential building, but they aren't sure if it was under construction, vacant or had tenants. But they do believe it had residents in it.
And yes nrthsgrl...hopefully since it was a work day, there would've been less people in it at the time.
It's been flattened. Within seconds. So scary.

This is so sad. The commissioner just said on tv that there were no current work permits on either building. They said the air quality in that area is very bad and they are trying to keep people away. So sad.

So Sad..seeing firemen and other workers working without masks makes me wanna scream..They should have them on!! My Uncle worked 9-11 without a mask and had to retire due to 9-11 Syndrome. He can barely breathe and has growths in hs lungs. Praying for everyone!!

There are also reports that a gas leak was called into Con Ed for the building next door 15 minutes before the explosion.

I am so incredibly sorry for your uncle. He did such a wonderful thing for our country. I am so sorry that he became ill from the after effects.
I cannot believe that breathing masks are not part of the SOP for all first responders. The TV reporter for ABC had a mask on her face.

I work in West Harlem. You can definitely smell the fire but, not there isn't too much smoke--but it's hard to tell b/c it's overcast. There are tons of sirens and helicopters buzzing about. Metro North will probably be shutdown, I'm thinking....

I had actually texted my DH when I saw the picture of the fireman not wearing a mask because he's FDNY. I asked him if they have to wear them and he said "It depends" Waiting for a response on why....I said to him that imagine ALL the peoples stuff that was in the apartment building, then all the stuff that the building was built with and whatever else has grown since then...its not safe!
