BTDT Moms...Lamaze...was it useful?

DH and I are looking to register for classes at Good Sam. We are debating over taking a lamaze class. Some friends have told us that it was a waste of time, but I am curious to hear what others have to say. Is it worth it? Did you use it? Thank you!

I didn't take it and honestly didn't regret it at all.

My L&D nurse actually told me she preferred it so that she could tell me to do things her wayChat Icon Chat Icon

I didn't take it either. Me personally, i felt that you couldn't really prepare yourself. You may think you can, but when it happens... you do what comes naturally and the nurses guide you anyway! Chat Icon

Re: BTDT Moms...Lamaze...was it useful?

I took a class through the hospital that was all labor and delivery class..basically it just walked you through the whole process, what to expect with each stage.

IT HELPED ALOT!!! We did 10-15 mins of breathing/relaxation practice at the end of each class and I did use it in Labor. You need to know how to control your breathing, no matter what the nurse tells you during labor there is so much going on it's easy to start hyperventilating when you are in so much pain. They teach you how to push the right way too.

IF it's your 1st kid, i highly recommend taking or watching something...especially if you plan on going natural-no pain meds. I didn't take the epi until 4-5 cms and I needed my breathing for those 1st 4 cm's and during pushing.

If for nothing else, the breathing helped.....
I got to almost 9cm without an epi, had I known, I would have tried to go without......

I think it's worth it......just to also know what the heck is going on with your body...

I didn't take it because I just didn't have time and I don't regret it! I had a wonderful labor experience and don't think lamaze would have made any difference. The nurses get you through everything! The only thing I would recommend would be taking a hospital tour! (the will set this up for you separately!) The most important thing I remeber them saying during the tour was that you had to go to the ER during the night hours and that helped since I went into labor at midnight!

Big waste of time and money. A year later dh is still complaining that I dragged him to the class Chat Icon But I was induced so it wasn't a normal delivary.

Re: BTDT Moms...Lamaze...was it useful?

I took a baby class with DS1. I never pushed with him so I ended up not needing it (He never came down the birth canal so I ended up with a c-section). With DS2, however, I went into full blown labor VERY quickly so I needed the breathing techniques. I didn't need it for the pushing part (I had a repeat c-section) but I did need it to deal with my contractions that were 2 - 3 minutes apart Chat Icon

Yes - not for the breathing techniques, that was a waste. It was good to learn the stages of labor, know what to expect and to take the hospital tour.

We took the one day lamaze class and we really enjoyed it and thought it was worthwhile. The nurse who ran ours was wonderful and the whole day was very informative and the hospital tour was great! When my water broke a few hours before my scheduled C-section I started getting pretty intense contractions and the breathing really helped. If nothing else it was fun going because it made everything feel so much more real for us. Chat Icon

Re: BTDT Moms...Lamaze...was it useful?

I took it just in case I needed it. There is so little you can control about the pregnancy, so I wanted there to be something that at least I felt like I was in control of!
Turns out, I didn't need it during labor....my friend's mom died a few weeks before I gave birth and I was an emotional mess. I used the breathing methods during the funeral to help keep myself from losing it.

Re: BTDT Moms...Lamaze...was it useful?

I took it and it did nothing. When I got to the hospital they gave me pitocin and within an hour and all the lamaze I could handle I opted for the epi. Trust me don't force your self through it. If you don't think it will be neccasary then don't waste your time.

ITA. It think it was more important for my DH to have some knowledge. I never used a single breathing technique taught.

We never took a class and I don't think I missed out at all. Although we did hire a doula to help me through and she was nothing less than amazing!
