Re: breastfeeding or formula

I'm on the fence. I could go either way at this point. When I get a chance I will explain my thinking about both.

I hope we can all discuss this without it getting heated!

Re: breastfeeding or formula

I have never had any desire to breastfeed. I know many people do, but for some reason I have never wanted to. I doubt if I will even try it, so, to answer your question I will be using formula (unless for some reason I change my mind in the next few months)

Re: breastfeeding or formula

Im going to try to breastfeed and see how it goes. My mom did the same thing and she said that she never knew how much we were actually getting so she switched to formula. So Im going to try and see how it works out. I want to do what is supposedly best for the baby, but if I end up not sure if the baby is getting enough food, then I will switch.

Re: breastfeeding or formula

I don't know what to do. I am so very uncomfortable with the thought of breastfeeding. It's me, and my psychie, nothing else really.

For now the plan is to bottle feed, but I feel like I am letting the baby down, I really don't know what to do.

Re: breastfeeding or formula

I don't have a strong opinion either way. I think I may try breastfeeding, even though I'm not super comfortable with the idea, but it's worth a shot. And if I see it's not for me, or if it becomes not possible, then i will switch to bottle.

I just wanted to say, the responses are very mature and it's nice to see Chat Icon

The best thing you can say, if you're on the fence, is that you'll give it a try and if it doesn't work, go to formula.

I tried...I didn't like it...I have formula fed now for 10 months. He is very healthy and I'm happy with my decision and will FF #2 when that happens.

On another note...my friend who had her baby 2 weeks ago had zero probs breastfeeding..he latched like a champ and other than occasional soreness, she is doing great. So not everyone has problems, BUT it isn't usually that easy for everyone.

Whatever everyone decides to do, be content knowing you're doing what is right for you!

Wanted to add...FF can be $$ which is a downfall. Prob $100/month on average, but now less that we are introducing whole milk and he is on a ton of solids...coupons and samples are great!! I got by for 3 months without needing to spend a dime on formula..have friends/family register for enfamil/similac and use the samples. It was great to have!

Formula for me - I have never had any desire to breastfeed. I think it's great for those who do but for numerous reasons, we'll be opting for FF.

I plan on nursing but I am guessing I may have to supplement with formula at times. I hope she takes both!

Re: breastfeeding or formula

I also plan on breast feeding and doing so committedly (is that a word)...however...

being that I never have I will not beat myself up or feel that I've failed my child if it just doesn’t work out for me.

Baby Bargains does give an approximate figure on what breast feeding will save you the first year or so but I can't remember the #.

??? Anyone have the book on hand ???

I plan on breastfeeding since the health benefits are so good, though I have to admit, it sounds strange to me.

Re: breastfeeding or formula

I go back on forth. On the BF side of the coin is the immunity build up for baby, and the bonding between mommy & baby. On the FF side of the coin is the daddy participation in feeding, and the ease of transitioning back to work if the baby is already on bottles & formula.

My sister BF and told me if breast stimulation is an important part of foreplay I might want to think twice about BF. She can't stand having her DH touch the girls now that she has BF. (although I suspect this is a personal reaction and everyone is different, it is something that never crossed my mind until she said it)

What a nice thread Chat Icon

I only formula fed. I decided before I had him that I was only going to formula feed and then strangely, my milk never came inChat Icon

Formula is expensive, but not the end of the world. DS is on Gentlease and it runs anywhere between $23.49 and $28.99 for a big can, which last about a week right now for us. I get formula checks (which you should sign up for either way) and last week I paid $14 for a can at Target. Regular Similac or Enfamil is a touch cheaper and both Target and WalMart have generic of it and the generic costs about $11 or so.

HTH!

Re: breastfeeding or formula

I'm going to try and breastfeed and pump however if it doesn't work out I'm not going to beat myself up over it. I don't think there is anything wrong with giving a baby formula if you can't or don't want to breastfeed.

I plan on EBF for the 1st 2 months or so then I will do both so that if I need a break DH can help out a bit. I EBF Alex for 1 month then pumped and used formula.

Re: breastfeeding or formula

Definitely want to try breastfeeding. I should be home 10-12 weeks, so I am hoping to get a nice routine down before I head back to work, and then maybe pump 1-2x a day at work.

That's the best case scenario!

Formula checks are coupons. Sign up on all the websites (Good Start, Enfamil and Similac) and you will get coupons for them. I had originally signed up for only Similac b/c that is what the hospital put us on, but then switched to Enfamil. Plus once you are on Parenting you can swap what you don't useChat Icon

You can also sign up early b/c they send them based on your due date Chat Icon

Re: breastfeeding or formula

I plan on breastfeeding. The natural nutrients that is made specifically for the baby is why. I took a breastfeeding class just to know why it is so important. I just hope the baby will latch on and I have a good amount to provide. A few people I know tried and it didn't work out.

You are so right!

I plan to formula feed, unless by some devine intervention, I get the incling to nurse, which I doubt. I am not very comfy with the whole idea.....
