'Black Tie' Wedding question

We got invited to a black tie wedding on a Saturday night at the Allegria hotel in long beach. we can't wait, so excited. But, what in g-d's name do I wear??Chat Icon

We are staying overnight at the hotel and it's Chat Icon so I'd really rather not buy a long gown to boot, but do I have to?

will a nice black dress with some cool accessories be ok?

I don't know the venue.. but typically a black tie wedding denotes more formal than you'd wear to any other type of wedding
is it optional or preferred?

if optional then you could get away with cocktail length black dress, but if its preferred then i'd say you need something more formal, whether its a longer dress, or the fabric/detailing makes it more fancy

Re: 'Black Tie' Wedding question

I think you should be okay with a formal cocktail dress.

the invite says 'black tie.' the black dress is fancier than what I would wear to a wedding that didn't call for black tie, but it's not full length and it's not beaded.

Re: 'Black Tie' Wedding question

The fact that it says black tie means and aren't saying optional means it will be fancy. Most men will be wearing tuxs, and women long dresses....I'd TRY to find a long dress that isn't too expensive honestly.

Re: 'Black Tie' Wedding question

I always wear a fancy cocktail dress to black tie weddings. I never wear a long dress.

ETA: and I am never the only one in a shorter dress.

Re: 'Black Tie' Wedding question

I had a wedding at the PLAZA and asked the same question..most people suggested i wear a long gown..which i did. HOWEVER, there were plenty of people who wore fancy cocktail dresses....If i would have known that many people were not going to be in gowns, i definitely wouldn't have worn one. I'm just more comfortable in a shorter dress.
SO, to answer your question, i don't think you have to wear a gown.

HAVE FUN.

Re: 'Black Tie' Wedding question

Even though some people might wear shorter dresses they are looking for you, by putting that on the invite, to wear a gown and for the hubs to wear a black suit with a black tie or a tux. So, I would go to the BCBG outlet and by a long dress on sale. I would not feel comfortable going in anything but floor length if the invite said that.
