What do I wear to a wedding that is "Black Tie Invited"?

I have long black gowns but neither of the ones I have are that great for my post baby body. I still need to lose a few Chat Icon

Then I have a zillion cocktail dresses - none awesome either but some better than the long.

What do I wear? Also, DH has a tux but most of the DH's of my friends are wearing dark suits so would you want him in the tux or suit? I told him to wear whichever he wants - but he's not sure if "invited" means preferred or what.

IMO a dark suit is fine, so is a cocktail dress.

"black tie invited" to me means - please don't show up to our wedding in kahki's

Re: What do I wear to a wedding that is "Black Tie Invited"?

i went to a black tie last summer and had Chat Icon to go out and get a long black dress! i ended up being one of the only ones in a long dress!!! my dh wore a dark suit and so did 85% of the men.....most women wore black 3/4 length cocktail dresses or short black dresses---don't stress over this!---i thought i was going to be the only one in a short dress so i ran out to get a long one!

IMO Black Tie Invited means, if you have a tux- feel free to wear it. Also, it invites women to dress fancier should they want to. Is the wedding at a "fancy" place?

If DHs friends and family arent wearing tuxes, i wouldnt want mine to wear one. And if he doesnt wear one, you dont have to feel so compelled to wear such a fancy gown.

Edited to add pic.

Something like this perhaps??

I would wear a black cocktail dress. Even a beautiful black suit. I would stick with black to be safe though. I had a black tie optional wedding and that is what a lot of people wore.

Youd don't have to wear black (Although it's alwasy my OWN preferred color) but you can wear an appropriately 'fancy' cocktail dress

DH does not have to wear a tux and will most likely be one of very few if he does -

Re: What do I wear to a wedding that is "Black Tie Invited"?

I actually decided to check with the bride since I've heard so many conflicting ideas of this. She said tux is preferred, but black suit OK and my dress can be cocktail length - but should be black.

Not a problem b/c I have 17 variations of a black dress/gowns (not that I fit nicely into them all these days), but honestly - whatever happened to just trusting people to look appropriate and leave it at that?

Sounds like you're all set then. Unfortunately if you just leave it at that and say Saturday Night Long Island, people mostly look appropriate but some people don't. I kid you not, someone wore SHORTS and a navy blazer and boat shoes to my wedding, which was at 7pm on a Saturday night. I just had one this weekend. I read an article recently that mentioned a woman's dress does NOT have to be floorlength. And your friend should know that it doesn't have to be black either (I hope she doesn't throw anyone not wearing black out of her wedding Chat Icon).

The women at the wedding this weekend were mostly in cocktail dresses, and most of the older women were in long dresses. The men mostly wore tuxes, and a few wore black suits. IMO most of the tuxes these days are not made like they used to be, and look like black suits anyway.

Chat Icon Unfortunately, I think the people that dress like that - will no matter what. It's nice to have people looking appropriate at your function, but I feel like, in the end - all that matters is that your guests have a good time!

Oh yeah this is totally true, I really don't care. BUT MIL was ****** (it was her friend's "boyfriend", now husband, they got married shadily in Alaska like right after our wedding)....and also sent her an email like 2 days before the wedding vaguely mentioning that her son wasn't coming any more....so MIL was not so happy!

Re: What do I wear to a wedding that is "Black Tie Invited"?

you can totally wear a cocktail dress..

IMO, it means, it's black tie optional-- but they would prefer you dressed black tie.

I think women have more flexibility in what black tie actually means... where as for men-- it's more cut and dry.
