How do you handle school birthday parties for DCs/DSC's?

We have always (and will always) do them separately. It sounds great to do a combined party "in theory," however, any situation where we are all together always ends up uncomfortable and a bad time for everyone. Kids pick up on stuff and they will know if you're genuinely uncomfortable. Our kids never had an issue with it and they are very happy, well-adjusted children.
