Stony Brook, Empire resolve reimbursement rate dispute July 24, 2009 by OLIVIA WINSLOW / [email protected]
Empire BlueCross and BlueShield, the state's largest health insurer, has resolved a dispute over reimbursement rates with Stony Brook University Hospital and reached a multiyear agreement for a new contract, the HMO announced Friday night.
A spokeswoman for the hospital said Friday that the hospital was "encouraged that we have come to an understanding in concept."
"We look forward to signing a contract with terms with which all parties are comfortable," said Lauren Sheprow, the spokeswoman for Stony Brook. "We anticipate it will be signed before the expiration date, which is July 31."
The agreement follows contract negotiations that hit a snag over reimbursement rates. Earlier this month, Empire sent out letters to its members saying they may be unable to use Stony Brook University Hospital, as well as three East End hospitals, except in an emergency, if the dispute was not resolved by July 31.
Empire's agreement with Stony Brook does not include the other three hospitals: Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport, Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead and Southampton Hospital.
In a statement, Empire announced it had "reached agreement on a new contract" and that "under the multiyear agreement, Empire members will continue to have access to Stony Brook Hospital as in-network."
The statement quoted Mark Wagar, president and chief executive of Empire, who said: "Empire is proud to continue supporting a hospital that has established itself as an asset to the community."
